    kocu,
If I were to convert DAT to AVI, I would first convert the DAT file to MPG with something like VCDGear.
Now that you have an mpg file you can pretty much do with it as you please. Converting it to AVI so that some type manipulation can be done only to convert that back to mpg to put back into a VCD or DVD seems to me a path to a good deal of quality loss in the video.

If you provide some more details on what your end goal is then there might be even better and quicker approaches available.

First of all, WHAT kind of DAT file are we talking about?

Most of the time, when we say DAT, we think of the files in VCD format, which is just slightly repackaged MPEG, but without knowing the actual source, DAT is a bit too generic of an extension to know what you're converting from.

My goal is to convert the DAT file to mpeg2 for DVD. I do not know that I can make it mpg directly from DAT.

I do not know what type is the file. I suppose it is DAT for VCD.
    How can I see it?

I guess if you just want to try it, get VCDEasy, which has a tool that turns DAT back into MPG (it does a lot more too, so you may want to keep it around)

Extract the mpg with isobuster, guide here: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/141726.php#vcd

Author it with TDA. Your VCD mpeg-1 is DVD ready, do not encode to mpeg-2. TDA will resample the audio to 48 KHz as required for DVD.
