I have about 230 rm. files and i want to put them on my ipod so i can see them. I have tried converting these movies to ipod format, and i have found a way to by 1st converting it to AVI Divx using the mencoder, and then to quicktime .mov format. I have tried, but i cannot go directly to .mov format. Then i drag the file to iTunes and use the new convert selection to iPod tab in the tools bar. This works, but when i do the size increases from 35 MB to about 135MB. I was just wondering if there is another way to get RMs on an iPod without makin the file so big, like maybe using a 3rd party converter instead of iTunes, like iSquint, or something in the ffmpegx part of the conversion

  2. You should convert first to AVI DivX with mencoder, and then to iPod by using the iPod presets.

Yea i did that and the size of the file still went from 35 to +100 mb. Is there any setting i could change or anything i could do to make the file smaller. I don't need high quality i m just playing the videos on an ipod, not a TV.

  6. The smallest size can be achieved with "iPod h.264". Make sure you use a width of 320 pixels and a bitrate of 200kbps.

The iPod preset assumes that the source video is already at the same-or-greater resolution and bitrate of the iPod format. What's probably happening is that your video is getting scaled UP and the birate is being set higher than the original video.

Take note of the video bitrate, audio bitrate, video size and audio channels. Then modify the "iPod Preset" settings to closely match these.

If you don't understand any of that, then I would suggest you leave well enough alone and accept the increased file size.

i changed the format using the ipod h.264, and the file was only 28.6 mb after i adjusted some of the things like bit rate, but the file was able to be played by any media player, even vlc. the file ended in .264, is there anything i can do to fix this

  12. The .264 is a temporary file, it is going to be erased automatically at the end of the encoding and replaced by a .mp4 file, unless there is an error interrupting the process (in that case, click the blue "i" button in the Progress window and copy/paste me the error by sending me an email to major4@mac.com).
