VOB files are corrupt when burned but not if copied!

I have an odd situation when burning a downloaded DVD.
I can play the VOB files on the PC that they are downloaded to but once
burned to a DVD they become corrupt somehow!
Even if I copy that same VOB back to the PC from the DVD it still says it is
corrupt! But since it copies OK and the file appears the same I don't know
what is corrupt!

It appears to be commpon for downloaded DVDs to have incorrect structures. This is probably due to them being created by baboons with little or no idea what they are doing. Depending on how you play them, they may appear to be fine, however once burned to a DVD disc, they must fully comply with the DV specification. Yours obviously don't.

9 times out of 10 it is the IFO files that are the problems.

There are two possible solutions for you to consider.

1. If this is a commercial release, go and buy it. The commercial version will not have the problems you have now, will look better, and has a nice cover and everything.

2. If it is a legitimate download, either try again, or use IFOEdit to recreate the IFO files and hopefully fix the problem.

All good advice there.
But there are more details which make it seem to be more strange.
It is possible to play just the .VOB files alone in e.g., RealPlayer.
If I take the original .VOB file as downloaded and play it - fine.
Copy it to another PC/HD and back again and play it - fine.
Burn it to a DVD disk and play it - broken!
Copy it from DVD disk to PC/HD and play it - broken!

I have found the same with small DVD's (under 4.36Gb). I used to able to crack with DVD Decrypter and burn straight away and have a playable copy. Now I HAVE to use DVD Shrink on even the small ones to get a playable copy. I am burning with the same software I have always used Instant CD/DVD.

The sony protection, arcoss, requires newer software to beat it. DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink have not been updated in some time, and will not be updated again. The latest version of AnyDVD (payware) or DVD Fab Decrypter (Freeware) are required to copy these disks, and need to be updated frequently to keep up.

In your case, I would be more suspicious of your hardware, as it appears to be the act of burning that is causing you problems, and may also be contributing to your sudden inability to correctly copy discs.

Thanks, and also for the tips about better s/w.

I am able to copy other files (.avi, .mpg and applications etc.) without any corruption. I would have thought if it was hardware then it would randomly hit any burning I do not just .VOB's. Afterall it is all just data to the burner. I had wondered if the Sony software had got onto my PC and was singling out just .VOB files to mess up. But even then it doesn't explain why the .VOB files put thru' DVD Shrink burn O.K.

It's not the rootkit that gets DVDs, it is deliberate corruption in the files themselves. Scetions of the files that aren't referenced during normal use are corrupted in such a way that the disc plays, but copy programs choke. Depending on where the corruption lies, reauthoring of having another piece of software erwrite all or part of the structure may correct the issue.
