I am trying to convert .avi to .mpeg

The first file worked from. Excellent.

The problem with the others is that when I place the clip(about 22 minutes in length), it ends up making the finished product more than two times the length.

    a 22 minute clip becomes a 55 minute clip.
    Why is this happening?

Is TMPGEnc really the best program do convert avi to mpeg? it seems like such a hassle.

MP3 VBR audio? TMPGEnc chokes on that. Check it with Gspot 2.52 or drop it into VirtualDub Mod and you will know right away.

This is what Gspot told me under Audio

    "0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3"

No-one is forcing you to download the crap you're downloading.

TMPGEnc is fine. Perfect, in fact, for "AVI to MPEG" in general.

It's your source that's been re-encoded by some monkey trying to squeeze every last drop of video quality out of the file by using VBR audio that's causing your problems.

Rule no 1 of downloaded AVIs is to drop it into GSpot and see if you have VBR MP3 audio. If so, use either of the following guides to extract a WAV:
    http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm
    https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=837#837

Then feed your AVI and the WAV into TMPGEnc. Alternatively I believe you can just use the Source Range function to specify the first and last frames explicitly and this is rumoured to overcome it also.
    If in doubt, Google it.
