With the release of the 5th Generation IPOD which has the capability to playback video, many owners have been disappointed to find that under the best conditions, video playback on a fully charged battery is limited to between 2 and 4 hours. While there are many external battery extenders available for the IPOD, I was unable to find one that allows you to attach the battery pack to the IPOD while keeping the device in it's case. While I wanted function, I also wanted form. Below is my solution for the time being using off the shelf products with a minimal amount of time to make the modification work and still retain a clean look. The backup pack can be removed and attached in a matter of seconds. Tests so far using NI-MH 2200mAh 1.25 AA batteries have shown 7 hours video playback time and 20 hours radio/music playback. It is also important to note that the Belkin Battery Pack does not charge the IPODs internal battery. During playback the external pack is used first and then the IPODs battery second after the external pack is depleted. The Belkin backup battery pack has a series of four green LEDs and a test button to show approximate remaining battery time. I hope this will give some IPOD owners a solution and maybe some the opportunity to improve on the idea. B. Hall
