Hi - Newbie here. Can some one please explain why some portable DVD Players will play all types of discs except VCDs? My Insignia IS-PD040922 sees DVDs, CDs, MP3s, & JPEG. Isn't technology supposed to be backwards compatible? What can I do to get it to see VCDs. Thanks for looking.

There are many DVD players that cannot play VCD's. It is a hardware issue and there is nothing that you can do to make it work.

Devices specifically aimmed for American markets generally do NOT have VCD capabilities. After all, where are you going to find VCD's except in Asian retail stores and online?

Thank you kindly for your replies. (Sigh) I guess I'll just live with it... I just thought that if it could see homemade DVDR both +/- that it would also read a measly VCD!

You poor Americans. Won't play PAL, won't play VCD. You would have to put a huge amount of effort into one that wouldn't play VCDs over here.

Extract your video from the VCDs and author as DVD with TDA. It will upsample the audio, and will leave the video as is.

Thanks guns1inger for your advice. Since I am a newbie what is "unsample"? I looked for it under the Glossary section but not to be found. Also if I use the program you recommend will the DVD have the same quality of video or will the video deteriorate in the translation? Because the quality of the VCDs are so so and if it deteriorates more then it's really not worth the time....

Just do as instructed and it will work. Upsampling means it will convert 44.1 Khz sampling frequency to 48Khz.
Audio degradation is likely to be negligible.
TDA will likely warn you about making an incompatible DVD, just go ahead, and if you can, try a DVD-RW first.
There is no degradation in video at all.

    Ciao
