I've the Sincity(full version) DVD. The Chapters 7 to 20 couldn't be played in any of the DVD Playing softwares. I tried PowerDVD, Intervideo WinDVD, Video Lan VLC Media Player and MPC. None of them played the chapters from 7 to 20. I don't know what the problem is. So, I thought of ripping the DVD.

I've AnyDVD v5.8.2.1, and I also have ASPI drivers installed. But, after about first 10minutes of the movie being copied(at about 18%) using any kind of software - DVD Decrypter v3.5.4.0, DVD Fab Platinum v2.9.6.9(in both Gold & Express mode), Smart Ripper v2.41, Clone DVD v3.9.1.0, Isobuster v1.8(build 1.8.0.4) and DVD Shrink v3.2.0.15, an error message appears or the process simply hangs up and the DVD backup stops immediately.

The error messages shown in DVD Shrink(during it's video preview mode), Isobuster and DVD Decrypter are something related to 'cyclic redundancy of data'.

Surprisingly, the DVD plays perfect on external DVD Players. I played it at my friend's house. Same was the case with 'The Aviator' and 'Amen' a few weeks back.

Anybody, please tell me what's the point in the existence of errors (according to softwares) on DVDs which play extremely well on a DVD Players.

Please suggest a way out to backup such kind of DVDs.

Did you happen to see the warning label about this DVD not being able to play properly in certain computer based systems? Most DVDs have those today. The purpose of adding these "errors" is to do exactly what you are experiencing in that it prevents you from illegally making copies of this media. The interpol/FBI warning explains this.

I guess there isn't any warning label on the DVD.

While I've not seen the need to backup this DVD(movie stinks) I'd say the latest version of DVD Fab Decrypter should do it just fine. It seems to work on any title I've tried.

So will Any DVD. As to whether the movie stinks?? Well that oppinion best left to the person who bought. If you did not buy then you are open to any barrage that might come your way.

My son bought it and I backed it up for him with Anydvd and Shrink. Came out perfect. However, I tried to make an MP4 version of it for his Ipod and that, for whatever the reason did not work. The DVD to IPOD converter I used would fail to cenvert it. The back up I made converted OK. Yes that movie seems to feature some interesting little tricks to attempt to foil the common person from coppying it. However it turned out to be a piece of cake.

yeh good eh..they get ripped out too,fbi warnings my arse..
"dont copy this because youll get more jail time and a bigger fine than if you ran down an innocent person in your car,or knifed someone in a fight."
US law is so up its own arse.

now as for ripping the sin city disc, ive managed to rip sin city-region 1+2/sin city-extended and recut - region 1,using dvddecrypter, and anydvd..then removed any messed up cells/unwanted audio with dvd2one.
both used a pioneer 110,and i also ripped sin city region 1 with a pioneer 108.
not too sure what your problem is,it may be all that shit on the pc.
get rid of some of it,and start again,is the advice id say.
also forget about shrink, most of the time its a POS,its older than the oldest version of dvd decrypter--dvdfab decrypter is a slightly better ripper now.
also the recut version of sin city, has some mastering errors in it,not deliberate, but they are there nonetheless.

Sorry I thought saying it stunk meant the opinion was implied. Fortunately the movie cost me only pennies to watch(rented on a pay per month consume all I can view plan). I wish I could reclaim the time I wasted though.

Maybe the disc is scratched? dirty?

Smarter than you anyways. Read the OP. Does it say recut version? Nope, but that's $19 new at blockbuster. Surely cheaper than the time already spent and the DL media to make a pristine copy of a recut extended version of this flick.

The regular version has no advanced copy protections that I am aware of, nobody reported any issues on it months ago when it was released, myself included. Check the forums, it is the new version that is problematic. So bite me.

I don't know exactly why only the Computer points out errors on DVD.

However, I used CDCheckv3.1.9.0 to check the data errors(Cyclic Redundancy Check) i.e., CRC errors. The software started showing CRC errors after about 700MB of DVD data (VTS_01_1.vob) has been copied.

CDCheck software has an option to Recover a DVD's CRC errors by using special statistical procedures while extracting sectors.

Download the software here: http://www.elpros.si/CDCheck/CDCheckSetup.exe, and read the help files after installing it.

The HELP files explain in detail about the procedures followed by CDCheck to recover data having CRC errors.

So, I used the 'Recover' option to backup DVD files onto HD. Since the software uses certain techniques to recover CRC affected sectors, it is taking extremely long time to backup the files on DVD. The Read Rate reduced to as much as 10KB/s.

Thus, if I continue to rip the DVD using CDCheck keeping it in 'Recover' mode, the drive will continuously run for about 12-24hrs. which is an absolutely worthless attempt of backing up a DVD, as such a continuous usage will kill my DVD drive. So, I decided not to use 'Recover' feature.

However, after making many attempts using numerous softwares, CDCheck finally helped in recognized the problem totally and also suggested a way to recover the CRC affected sectors(although I don't prefer to use that feature).

Now, if I can get any software which can

1.) Recognize "CRC errors in DVD data"
2.) Provide a way to 'Recover' such data in a faster manner unlike CDCheck.

then, may be I can find a out.

    FWIW...

SinCity DVD ->DVDFab Decryptor -> Shrink (extract only - no compression... Not really needed) -> Pgcdemux & Chapter-X-Tractor -> DVD authoring app -> burn.

I don't get a thing here. Which part of the phrase 'Cyclic Redundancy Check' couldn't you understand mikiem.

I had been making clear since the past few days that I couldn't extract the movie from the DVD using any kind of software due to the presence of 'CRC data errors' on the DVD(as detected by a few softwares), and you're suggesting me to use DVD Fab, DVD Shrink etc..

My boy, your suggestion of pgcdemux & Chapter-X-Tractor are totally ridiculous and a complete waste.

Please read the forum topic & the entire forum discussion first, and then post your reply. In this case, your reply is absolutely irrelevant and a complete waste of time for me.

Maybe instead of spending time insulting those trying to offer help or wasting tons of time, energy, media space, and life of your optical drives trying to backup a movie you obviously enjoy very much you could easily have a backup by purchasing a second copy. I own two DVD copies of quite a few movies. Admittedly I purchase the second copy mostly because I buy the movie when it's released only to have to re-purchase it months or years later because it is re-released with either added content a collectors edition or other similiar additions are made which allows me to support the entertainers and people who brought me the entertainment I enjoy.

My suggestion: Ignore any CRC Reading Errors while decrypting and purchase another copy of your favorite movie. You will not only support the entertainers but you will have the knowledge of owning a disc with the greatest compatibility amongst players/recorders available on the market today and in the future.

  20. i still say its got somethign to do with all that shit on the pc.
some of those programmes will conflict.
plenty people have managed to rip it,and back up both version,so its a problem with either your software,or hardware.not too smart to throw the insults about tho,as i for once agree with ROF,either get a second copy,or get someone else to back it up for you.

If it can't be extracted using any kind of software then it is obviously defective. Return it and get a new one. If you no longer have the receipt, buy a new one. Easy.

Not being able to extract it means Dimension films has done what so many other film production companies have dreamed of. They've produced a disc that is playable in DVD players/recorders but can not be extracted and copied. That's not a defect it's protection from death of baby seals or as America Corp. says it terrorism prevention.

I have a feeling the disc either has a non-visible scratch, is dirty, or otherwise is unlike those of most other peoples discs in that most people don't seem to have a problem extracting it's contents. Too bad I don't know anyone who wasted money on this flick. I'd be half tempted to ask them if they'd like a second copy just so I could verify that the lastest version of DVD Fab Decrypter will extract it and that Nero 7 will burn it.

    @ claypillar

Again FWIW, you're having prob. with the DVD. At any rate, if something works for everybody else, just not for you, then a) doing something wrong, or b) there's a compatibility &/or equipment prob., or c) the source is different. *A* is easy to verify, *C* is easy to verify (rental -- but only to verify the disc you own is bad ), *B* might cost.

You didn't seen to like other suggestions along those lines, so instead of writing that (as above), simply sketched out how I've *seen* it done. You may like or dislike the method -- the point was/is that's how it was done, it was possible fairly recently. And it was posted more out of sympathy for the kind folks trying to help you. If you want to really know what's wrong, talking with the gremlins in residence in my PC, you've got a rather nasty infestation. Alas they declined my invitation to join that party.

Edit: almost forgot... there's a few neighborhoods I'd like to recomend your visiting so you can try out your *boy* phrase. :P

  24. simple solution - get rid of all the shit programmes you have,on the pc,and start again,it could do with a trimming.
second step,if thats the computer specs you have, sony's are shit IMO,get a decent rom/writer like an NEC/pioneer,even try to upgrade your firmware.
thirdly, check for marks or scratches on the disc.
i backed up both versions of mine, and have had no problems,so have countless others.
there are errors on the recut version, but nothing that stops a determined ripper.

I would like to apologize to mikiem for the harsh and insulting behaviour shown by me. I was out of my mind, working continuously on the same DVD - trying to find a fact i.e., 'Is there a problem with the DVD or with the PC'

I humbly request everyone who have helped me sort out the problem to some extent or the other, not to take seriously any of the harshly spoken words.

As far as the progress of my 'problem solving' is considered, the latest updated information I discovered is that the DVD is encountering the same problem with other DVD-ROMs too. I checked the same DVD at 3 of my friends' houses. None of the DVD-ROMs have played the DVD properly. Some of them reported CRC errors. And some of them didn't even recognize the DVD.

However, the ever surprising issue i.e., 'the same DVD plays excellent on DVD Players' still stands out unbeaten. I tried playing the same DVD on DVD Players and found out that it's playing extremely fine. This kind of behaviour continues to shock me, eventhough I still am in pursuit of the cause and not able to find the exact reason why the DVD plays well on Players, and shows errors(CRC) on DVD-ROMs.

The fact that it sometimes is unrecognizable in some DVD-ROMs is most certainly representative of either visible/invisible scratch or other physical damage to the outer coating(ie. dirt, dust, debris). For the amount of time you've spent trying to figure this out and the sheer amount of conflicting software you've listed (and haven't listed), compiled with the amount of time you've complained and apologized for complaining, and adding the time spent inconveniencing your friends with your talk and their ROM time about this one DVD, a simple solution has been readily available.

Backing up this DVD is obviously extremely important to you. You obviously enjoy it so much after all you, your friends, and the forum members here have gone through. You obviously believe it's a quality movie, with top notch acting, and well delivered plot. The simple solution after all this time is to go out and continue to support those who brought you this fine movie and buy a backup copy.

My suggestion is to buy a version you don't already own that way you can have at least two different DVDs of the same movie but with added scenes, extra commentary, and other things which will make this purchase of a movie you obviously enjoy very much worthwhile. The savings in time, effort, and everyone having to listen to you doing something that most here and elsewhere have had no problem doing would be worth nearly twice the price you'll pay. Even at a lowly $5 an hour spent on what you've done(time is money) I'm sure you can see the savings.
