    Hi there

I will admit I am completely new to all of this. I have a Xvid video that I want to convert so that it can be used in a standalone DVD player. It does not support Xvid, so I have no other option.

I used TMPGenc Plus to convert it, by using the guides on this website and the resulting video is OK (except it's fullscreen?) but has no audio.

Read the TMPGenc problems sticky and downloaded VirtualDub and following yet another helful guide I converted the audio (MP3) to a wav file (a whopping 1093Mb).

Using TMPGenc, I close the wizard, browse to the video, browse to the audio (now a wav file) and use the preview option and the video opens fine but still there is no sound? I don't want to proceed any further without some help.
    Many thanks for your replies.
    Cheers

It sounds like you are on the right track. Hvae you listened to the wav file, to make sure it has something in it ?

If it does, try using ffmpeggui to convert it to 2 channel AC3 at 224kbps, and use this when authoring.

    Hi there

Yep, the wav file contains all the audio to the video 100%. If it plays as a wav file OK, will it work when I use it as the audio stream in TMPGenc?

Also why don't I get any audio when I use the Preview option in TMPGenc? Or does it not play sound? Not sure because this is the first time I've used it.

    Cheers

I haven't used tmpgenc in years, so I don't know if you should be able to hear it or not. I would encode the first 5 minutes and see what happens.

    Hi there

How do I do that and then watch it to see if the audio is working? Also what program do you use to convert Xvid / Divx to DVD?

    Cheers from Oz

An easy allinone solution is divx2dvd.
To test encode with TMPGEnc, just set it up as normal, and stop the encoding after a while.

    Hi there

yep, I'll try that tomorrow. But I would like to ask another question before I sleep.

I just loaded VirtualDub 1.6.12 on my other computer running Win98SE and it has the Xvid codec installed. I opened the video I referred to in my earlier post in GSpot and it states the codecs are in installed.

On trying to open the same video in VirtualDub I receive this error message:

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format XVID (unknown)"
"VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatibile codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable"
The video opens and plays in my crappy Win98SE WMP?
How can I get this to work?
    Thanks again.

    Hi there

Many thanks for your help. I tried that and now when I go to open the video the error message is the same except it says Divx and (Divx4+) instead of unknown.
So I still can't get it to work. Any other ideas please.

    Cheers

EDIT: I just changed the fourcc code from xvid to mp42 (thought I'd give it a go) and it opened! I don't know why (and I would like to for my learning experience) but at least it now opens.

The fourcc tells the app what codec to look for and use to decode a particular AVI. Many codecs handles lots of different "subformats", so if you're lacking the exact match (or is it's incompatible in any other way) some other codec might well handle your AVI as you've found.

    Hi again everyone.

Did not want to start a new post but could anyone out there suggest a DVD Authoring program, maybe similar to TMPGenc DVD author but that works in Win98SE.

    Many thanks

    Cheers

    Doesn't TDA work with W98?
    Well, another reason to upgrade...
AFAIK, no other autoring app provides the ease of use/output quality TDA gives.
But you could always try GUI For DVDAuthor which seems to work for 98/me
