    Howdy,

Received a new Sony DRX-800UL external CD/DVD drive for xmas as my old Sony DRU-510A was starting to konk out. I uninstalled my old Nero and installed the new Nero V 6.6.0.14 and started backing up around 10 or 15 of my discs that my old burner would not recognize any more. I didn't view any of the backups as the old unit DRU-510A burned flawlessly. So when my daughter came home from university and watched 3 of the backed up movies and they all started freezing an hour or so into the movie........ So I updated the firmware from KYO4 to KYO6 from the sony download section, backed up the flawed disc using DVDShrink and burned another copy using the new burner with the same end result. It started freezing at pretty much exactly the same point I then ran that point of the movie using the same files in DVDShrink preview window and it played flawlessly so I figured that DVDShrink wasn't the culprit. I then burned another disc using the same files, same media, same burning software and same procedure using my old DRU-510A and played the disc just prior to the point where the initial discs were freezing. It played flawlessly right through to the end..... I'm using the firewire connection and in Nero Burning Rom SE it sees the burner as a DRU-800A which is the sister internal version of the external burner I have. I'm not sure what else to check or do The new burner is burning the media at 4x as that's the max for the media I have right now because that's all the old burner could handle. Is there anything else I should look into? USB2 connection instead of Firewire? My box is a 1.7G w/ 768M SDRam which should be sufficient. Any help would be appreciated. I'll include a burn log file just in case anyone can pick something out of it.

    Thanks in advance,
    Max

It's Ritek GO4 pretty sure. But would that media burn perfectly on the older machine and not on the newer unit? As all variables were the same, just 2 different burners.

    Cheers,
    Max

The media would burn fine on your older sony dvd burner because it has the write strategy for 4x dvd media. Your newer sony dvd burner I believe is a 16x speed burner which may not have the write strategy for 4x dvd media. Also your new burner is probably a rebadged LITEON drive. Check out the LITEON/SONY FORUM at Cdfreaks.com.

The best firmware around for Sony DRU800 and Lite-on 1693S is codeguys' KC4B. Flashing to this firmware may fix your burning quality problems.

Read more about it in here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=152583

  6. It is absolutely possible that media which work fine on one drive will not work properly on another. The brand name on the front of the unit means nothing at all as regards the actual manufacturer.

    Try some different media.

    Try some RW.

Try burning over 4 gig of data and reading that back.

Try burning at the slowest available speed, if lower than 4x.

Sony burners have a pretty poor reputation for burn quality. If it is possible to exchange your Sony for another brand (Pioneer or NEC), you would probably be happier with it.

Could be the media for certain. I'm at the start of a new build, and am still sorting out the machine.
Using TYG02 media, I'm seeing the following:

Plextor PX712SA (SATA) FW 1.07 - 8X burning, but crapping out. Going to change out the SATA cable before doing any more burns.

NEC 3520AW - Updated FW to 3.06 - will only burn TYG02 @ 4X using Alcohol, Nero, or Decryptor. Will burn fake TYs from shop4tech @ 8X.

Panasonic SW9585 - no updates to FW. starts burn @ 8X, but only achieves 6X.

I'm going to try other media also. I've already changed out the RAM

The funny thing is this: Using a laptop & a Plextor PX716UF external drive on USB 2.0, I can burn the same media @ 8X to perfection, 16X to completion without any problems.

As others have said - every drive is different, as is their media requirements. I do have one program installed at the moment that I somewhat suspect could be mucking things up: Instant CD/DVD - as it has caused problems with another machine in the past.

Machine Specs: 3.06 GHz Celeron, 1 GB DDR400, 160GB 7200RPM Seagate primary HDD; removable secondary HDD; 3 burners as listed above.

    Good Luck

  9. That sounds like packet-writing software. GET RID OF IT!!!!!!!!

These progs have been problematic for years. I NEVER install them unless the customer specifically requests it, after I explain the problems very few still want it. Make that none. Bad, Bad, VERY Bad software.

Thanks for the input all, Budz, I understand what you're saying and it's makes sense that it could be as simple as the media in this case. In most cases I've found the simplistic route to be the most effective and then pursue deeper if that angle doesn't work. I have some new media on the way and I'll try it when it comes in. I have also received advice to use USB2 port instead of the firewire on another forum and I'm not going to rule anything out, but my firewire connection has been solid for the past 3 years capturing all my digital video without any problems. Would that thinking be in line with those on this forum to switch connections? I may also try the KC4B firmware Ofbarea is speaking to, but for the moment I'm going to try one thing at a time as I've already updated Nero to 6.6.0.18 without trying another burn. But first things first, I'll try new media with updated nero, if that doesn't work, what would you try next? Also is there a way to check the burn without having to playback the entire flick waiting for a freeze?
