Hi there,
I've been making "back ups" of my DVDs using either DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink depending on the size of course, and then burning them via Nero. My question is am I missing a step? The discs play on my DVD player(s) and on some friends' players as well however not on all? Am I missing a step or not including something (ie. iso..?) I'm not sure.
If not, thanks for the listen... please feel free to advise.
Sincerely,
Mary

All standalone dvd players do NOT play dvdr media, and some might only play dvd-r & not play dvd+r, vice-versa, ect.

Hi Noahtuck,
You're right. So the "method" of which I'm making the backups, is ok? I've been ripping the dvds using those methods and burning them with Nero keeping the media to DVD-r which is the more widely "playable" but always wondered if I might have been missing a step. So I am fine?
Thank you very much,

Yep, i've done tons of dvd's with that method.
If you are also using DVD Decrypter you could just use shrink to make and ISO image and then use DVD Decrypter to burn it back to a dvdr.
Alot of people seem to think that DVD Decrypter burns back better than Nero, but i have used nero for the last 2-3 years almost exclusively to burn 1000's & 1000's of dvdr's with no problems of playback. but i use DVD Decrypter alot for burning backup's the way i described, it just depends on what i am doing and both way's work fine for me.
I also use dvd+r's because i change the booktype to dvd-rom which has given me the best player compatability.
But if you run into a dvd player that wont play dvd-r's chances are it either won't play dvdr media or it could not like the brand of media. -
Yep just to add to noahtuck's excellent response try different brands of dvds too. If one brand of - or + r doesn't work on a player try a different one. If its less than three or five years old it should work with both types of discs (but no guarantee of course)

Don't use NERO for burning.
Let DVD Shrink output a VIDEO_TS folder.
Make an ISO IMAGE FILE using the classic version of ImgTools.
Burn that ISO IMAGE FILE using ImgBurn (which replaces the burning capabilites of DVD Decrypter).
Using NERO for DVD burning is BAD as it SUCKS !!!

P.S.
About the only media I fully 100% trust is Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs. The 8x discs work great. I'm sure the new 16x work well but I haven't used them yet. No matter what speed DVD-R you get you might want to try burning no faster than 6x for "best" burn results (i.e., better readability).
I buy my Taiyo Yuden blanks from RIMA.COM"The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci
