The disc does not stand still anyway, it keeps spinning, and the laser merely resumes on the next revolution when you hit play.

One of my DVD recorders has a pretty nice sized buffer for playing discs. You can hit pause, and the disc spins down after 5 minutes. When you hit un-pause, the video plays again from the buffer, and by the time the disc starts spinning, it's in the right spot. Sometimes you get a little hiccup, but it's generally seemless.

If you have to leave the room for a long time, just turn it off. Hot DVD players die quicker. My favorite player resumes where you stopped when power was turned off. Just hit PLAY to turn it back on and resume.
