  1. I've made a 7.9gig dual layer DVD in DVDLab Pro and tested it on the PC with Cyberlink. It works fine. I've set a layer break using the DVDLab Pro tool.

I test the discs once burned using Nero 7, again in Cyberlink, and it works fine.

But upon playing the disc in my standalone DVD player, the menu does not show but the background music can be heard playing. When I try the disc in the PC again, the menu has now vanished.

Im burning to Traxdata DVD+R DL. Anyone know about this kind of problem?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Get decent media. The only consistently good DL media at this time appears to be Verbatim.

    2. Use a good burning application. Nero is not great for burning DVD Video, and poor for burning DL DVD Video.

So, get some Verbatim DL discs, and either use imgtools to create an ISO for imgburn to burn, or look at Record Now Max/Prassi ONES as a burning application.

I've stopped using Nero to burn my DVD videos. I create ISO files, then burn with DVDDecrypter. A lot simpler, actually.

I do still use Nero to burn CDs and data DVDs.

For the record, for DL I use Verbatim, and for single layer, Maxell or Fuji MIJ, or TY discs.

Nero packs the data on DVDs so that your IFO and BUPs are in the same sector. Technically this is allowed, but the problem is that if you have a bad sector in the future and your IFO and BUP are on that sector, your DVD will become unplayable. Nero takes a lot of shortcuts in all kinds of things it burns. I've now reached the point where I basically am only using it to burn data discs and audio CDs.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that creating ISO files and burning with DVDDecrypter is simpler than Nero unless "takes longer and requires more work = simpler" for you, but I do think that making ISOs and burning with something other than Nero is SAFER and more likely to lead to good discs down the road. I very much second guns1nger's comments as I am a big fan of Verbatim discs and using Imgtools and Imgburn.

Nero has steadily got slacker from 5.5 (the last really solid version) through to 7. There are now too many components, and not enough time can be spent on each, hence the short cuts. If they got back to basics, perhaps they could make a good burning engine again. I use Prassi ONES - all it does is burn - no gimmics.

When using dvdshrink, creating an ISO file then burning with dvddecrypter IS simpler. I can't see how that takes more work and takes longer. I prefer a better quality backup over one that takes less time.
