I prefer ATI. Just pick a big powerful one and have at it.

  4. OK.

big, powerfull. but not the "Best"?
what do you think of the radeon 9800 256? or the 9800 xt 256?

these might not be quite the best.

  5. In general you want more V-Ram, s-video and composit video out (so you can use a TV to preview your edits), and core image compatability. And then when you realize how much that will cost you, you'll get whatever you can afford.

  6. thanks Will

if you have a second, can you look at these two sites and tell me if the cheaper is just OEM, ie the card with no frills or is it different from the one with the ATI box?

    http://www.connexions-pw.com/category.html?i=379.0.6501&Refer=PW

one is $199, the other $80 or so.

    cheers and Thanks

  8. The more expensive one is a "hybrid" Mac/PC version. It has a different ATI part number. It also has HDTV out.

Careful or you'll end up with a PC only card.
You basically have two choices, the ATI 9800, or the 9600.
Of course, the 9800 is the better card but may be overkill unless you play high end games.

The 9600 is not that much better than the card you have, except, it's Core Video capable. The 'cheap' 9600s were meant for G5s and have been modified for G4s. You can read about them at the site I linked to. ATI has recently released a 9600 that doesn't have to be modified for a G4...they are the more expensive 9600 cards.

Not much of a choice. And the 'Proper' 9600 for the G4 is not that much cheaper than a 9800. The 9800 however requires an extra power connection, has a notoriously noisier fan, and runs much hotter than a 9600.

    Your choice;

    Oh well,
If you're referring to the card at eWiz, good luck. I'm about 99.9% sure that's a PC only card. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. You'd have to flash the ROM to the Mac version, modify the card to work on a 4X AGP port instead of the 8Xs it's meant for, and cross your fingers. The boards are full of people with flashed PC only cards that won't work in their Mac.

    Good Luck,

    Sort of
You could use the modified 'cheap' OEM 9600s if you're satisfied with the output ports and the 64mb VRam.
    Otherwise,
It appears that the 'new' 'expensive' 9600s will run a 30" display via 'Dual Link' and offers HDTV output thru one of the DVI ports. Doesn't appear that you could run a 30 incher and HDTV at the same time though

It also doesn't appear that the 9800s offered have the 'Dual Link' or HDTV support. Maybe a new 9800 with dual-link and HDTV support is in the works? Hmmmm....

    Depends on your priorities :P
oh, ditto on the OWC link.
