  1. I have an Althlon XP2800 Barton rig that I have had a few years now, and its crammed full of stuff. 5 hard drives, audigy sound card, zip drive on a scsi card, AIW7500 graphics etc, spec is in my computer details. Anyway a little while back it would occasionally reboot, no warning, no blue screen of death, just a reboot. It gradually got worse and worse until now it wont even boot into windows, just keeps on rebooting over and over again. You can boot into safe mode, but after a few minutes it just reboots again.

I made a guess that perhaps it was a problem with the power supply, considering all the hardware I have in the case. The power supply was a chieftec 340W.

So I just put in an Antec true blue 480W supply. No change thing still just sits there in a continuous reboot cycle.

So my question is what faulty component would cause this rebooting with no warnings.

you could try this in safe mode.

right click on my computer>properties>advanced tab>under startup and recovery click settings button>in the startup/recovery window make sure automatically restart is >not< checked.
this might give you a BSOD instead of a restart

More than likely your power supply can't supply enough power and is rebooting. I can't say for sure because there are several components you didn't list. Do you any other expansion cards? Any optical drives? How much RAM do you have(amount and how many pieces)? Do have any external devices connected? Any system fans? What you've listed so far requires between 370 and 400 watts of power. That's not including your RAM or anything you didn't list. Have you daisy chained any SCSI or USB devices? My best guess is this rebooting is caused by too much power being consumed. For starters unplug a few of those hard drives or better yet replace them with something that adds up to a few of them combined. Unplug a few of those external devices(if you have quite a few) that aren't in use all the time.

    Hi,
you didn't tell us what windows version you have and ram you have.... always important factors..... and also when did this issue started.... was there any event predating this issue like install/uninstall or malware infections... etc etc..... also is the issue predictable... ie: does it happen with one program all or just certain one or a time day......??????
there could be several reason why.... and when ever i start to get diffiluct issue i always do basics first..... a little house cleaning first just to make sure a messy system isn't the cause....
    1. purges your internet cache, clear cookied files and defrag....
    2. run your antipsyware and antivirus programs to make sure there no culprits...
    3. disable any needless programs that running in the background... aat startup.... they cause all sort of issues including what you mentioned...
    4. if your in a 24/32 bit color change to 16 bit hi color........ take a lod off the system and improves speed and stability....

now these are just basics and a lot of time these basics will take care of the issues..... however if it doesn't least you know what not causing.....

  5. My computer spec is lited in my details, which I mentioned in my first post. The whole system ran fine for quite a while on a 340W chieftec power supply. I would then get random reboots quite infrequently until it got to the stage where it constantly reboots itself. I figured that it may be a proble with the supply, so I just purchased the Antec true blue 480W. Which is a much better quality and higher rated supply than the one I am replacing which until recently powered my system ok.

    All good suggestions.

But I'm thinking a RAM problem right off. Try substituting some known good sticks, or pull all your modules and substitute them one at a time.

Also in BIOS, check your CPU temps, though it doesn't sound like overheat. You might also make note of your BIOS settings and pull your BIOS battery to reset it in case of a BIOS corruption. Upgrade BIOS while you are at it.

    Next:
I would try to isolate the problem to either hardware or software. Having the same problem in safe mode helps to possibly narrow it down to an OS problem or hardware. Unplugging all but the boot drive, video card and RAM would be my next step. That should rule out a majority of the hardware, including the PS.

If no joy by then, that would leave the Boot drive (Unlikely), the CPU or the motherboard itself. Hopefully you would have a solution before you reach that point.

EDIT: I should have thrown in there substituting the video card, sometimes it can exhibit that type of behavior.

  7. I will strip the PC down and rebuild it with minimum components to see if I can isolate the problem.

    Thanks for all the suggestions
