I’ve recently converted to a Mac from PC where I used both the excellent Vegas and also Winavi to carry out conversions between different file formats.

Moving to the Mac I find the available video converters in QT, iMovie and Final Cut quite restrictive and lacking in formats. I’ve upgraded with things like flip4mac etc. but I’ve found rendering on the Mac incredibly slow.

I also run Virtual PC and find that Winavi can still run conversions in real time+ to mpeg etc. so I have no doubt that the machine is more than capable of rendering at decent speeds. I just seem to be having difficulty a native Mac application that meets my needs.

Basically I’d like either a stand alone programme or editor that allows import and reasonably fast conversion of AVI, mpeg, wmv, real, mov, etc. to and from the respective formats. I could carry on using Winavi in emulation but that just seems bad practice and not what I bought the Mac for.

I’ve found the conversion to a Mac a pleasurable and painless process on the whole but have to say that on the whole I’ve not been in any way impressed with video applications or their flexibility. On the video side it feels like a backward step at the moment.

If someone could provide some guidance and point me towards some good programmes then it’ll be very much appreciated.

Found the tools section and have been trying out streamclip and ffmpegx. Both excellent spec and fast so I guess I've probably solved my own question.
