Hi, I'm having such a hard time converting a movie so I can watch it on my DivX DVD player

I got it as a 3ivX format, found out I had to use graphedit to convert it to MP4, now i have this mp4 file that plays fine in Quicktime, now i want to convert it to avi

I tried using the mp4ui program to seperate it to an avi stream, but the video is all garbled after

I would use graphedit to convert it straight to Xvid but I can only figure out how to do 1-pass encoding, i would like to do 2

TMPGEnc will open the mp4, it wont convert to divx or xvid from there, it says "codec cannot be used for some reason" but huffy worked so i did that

Now i have this huge file thats huffy avi format, in virtualdub it will open but it wont convert to Xvid or Divx, it says cannot start compression, possible corrupt data??

I tried frameserving the mp4 from TMPGEnc to virtualdub, says same possible corrupt data error

I dont know whats going on, can anyone help??

Sounds like you got a MP4/3IVX in QT format, and you're trying to convert it to XVID/DIVX in AVI format?

Huffyuv is a compressed format (although lossless) but still needs needs decompression support. Is Huffyuv supported by DivX? You are expected to check this out, so I won't.

You usually get that message when the frame size is bad. Xvid and Divx don't like odd (as in odd and even numbers) frame sizes like 621x463. Resize, crop, or pad to even values (620x462) or even better, multiples of 16 (624x464).

now i have a new problem, the audio is ridiculously off sync, gradually it ends up being 23 seconds off near the end of the movie

i tried exporting a wav from the 3ivx format in quicktime, converted to mp3, still off sync

did the same with the mp4 file, same thing

i tried using the audio in the 3ivx file converting to wav from tmpgenc, i get no audio

i also tried manually fixing it,that wasnt succesful either, any suggestions?

  9. Is your original 3ivx video an AVI file or an MP4 file?

its an avi file, but it only plays in quicktime so i renamed it mov

i did the direct conversion of the audio from tmpgenc with the mov file and its just a file of silence

  11. Rename it back to AVI and use AVICodec to determine what codecs are used. Presumably 3IVX for the video, and I'm going to guess variable bitrate MP3 for the audio (usually a source of A/V sync problems when you convert).

If it really is an AVI file you can just change the fourcc code to DIVX or XVID (this only takes a few seconds) and it should play on your Divx/DVD player -- if the audio is compressed with something your player can play.

(3IVX is an MPEG 4 codec just like Divx and Xvid. So you probably won't have to reencode.)

i tried that, AVI codec says for the audio codec "unknown" and "supported"

i think its an aac file, but i could be wrong, it wont convert in db poweramp either, says codec cannot be opened (?)

i tried converting right out of quicktime pro to wav, it converts and plays but horribly off sync

i seperated the audio file from quicktime to an aac file, i just named it that, i dont know if it actually is one, i opened it in graphedit and im in the process of converting it to wav in there, i'll post what happens when it finishes

wow these apple formats are terrible, i have an easier time converting real media :P

    thanks for the help though

oh and i have to re-encode the video, it was the weirdest resolution, 1000 and something x 424, dvd player doesnt support that, i have converted it to a perfect xvid file at 720x292, that works fine, its just the audio thats the problem

  14. Did AVICodec indicate the video codec?

    yah it says mp4v = ms mpeg4 v1, 1050x424
audio codec says 0xFF = unknown
it might be ac3, thats what the decoder in graphedit says

i'll experiment some more later when i get home

  16. Since you can open it in VirtualDub, try exporting the audio as uncompressed WAV. Then import it and convert to MP2 or MP3.

After opening the file in VirtualDub select:

    Audio -> Full Processing Mode
    File -> Save WAV...

    After saving the WAV file:

Audio -> WAV Audio (select the WAV file)

Then select an audio compression codec and save.

I have a 3IVX AVI file here. I was able to open it with VirtualDub after changing the fourcc code to XVID with AVI FourCC Code Changer. If the audio is AC3 you should be able to work with it directly in VirtualDub if you have AC3 Filter installed.

Sorry, I should have warned you to make a backup copy before attepting that.

It sounds like your file wasn't an AVI file since you didn't see a normal fourcc code (always text like XVID, DIVX, 3IV2, etc). In those cases it's easy to change the fourcc back (if you remember what the original was).

The beginning of video files (where the fourcc code of AVI files is) is often nearly identical for a given file type. If you have a similar video you can try using a hex editor to copy the values from that file to the bad one.

Here's a 3IVX AVI file with the fourcc codes marked:

Every AVI file I've seen has the fourcc code in exactly the same place. Those are the locations that FourCC Changer changes. If you have similar intact file you could try restoring those 8 bytes in the bad file.

    hey thanks alot
luckily i had the original 3ivx movie on a dvd-r
im not messing with fourcc's anymore

before i remembered i had the copy on dvd, i was trying to find a movie that was encoded the same way, i found another 3ivx that had jibberish as a fourcc too, but when i copied it from that to my movie, it still didnt work

i think i might have fixed the audio sync problem, i wont be able to tell until the second half finishes encoding, but all i did was extract the aac file from quicktime, then open just the aac file in quicktime again and save as wav

i muxed it with my xvid part 1 movie and it was synced

before i did save as wav right from the 3ivx in quicktime and for whatever reason it was off sync when i muxed with my xvid

now the second half im going to encode today

    thanks again for the help

There i finished the conversion and it plays great and in-sync in my dvd player

this whole situation has taught me to not download any more 3ivx encoded movies
