I recently purchased a HP Pavilion

    Specs are:
    64 bit
    2.2 G Hard Drive
    1.5 G RAM

I installed DVD XCopy to burn DVD's

At first, it would burn them rather quickly...maybe save and burn time of around 30 minutes (maybe a little more...)

Now, though, it takes about three hours to both save and burn a DVD

I purchased another G of RAM (to take it to 1.5, which I installed myself) thinking that would help, and there is no change. It didn't even speed up my ability to work on other programs while I am burning a disc

I would like to be able to burn fast again, does anyone have any suggestions?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

    Callie

why would you want to use DVD XCOPY when you can use freeware like DVD SHRINK, DVD DECRYPTER AND DVD FAB DECRYPTER.

check your dvd drive that it is DMA MODE.
here's a link showing how to enable DMA MODE.

Most likely the burning time is not the problem, although it could be slow if DMA isn't enabled. DVDXCopy is probably using most of that time to read and compress the disk.

Check if you are running in PIO mode, as suggested. If you are, go to Dell's and search for PIOtoDMA. It is a handy little app that can reset to DMA mode without the need to reboot, which all the other methods require. The only catch is you must have your burner on the second IDE channel for it to work.

I am, and have been running in DMA mode (checked it when it first slowed down, and it was DMA then as well)

As far as why I used DVD X Copy; I use it b/c it's what's handy. I don't know anything about the programs that you all suggest, but have downloaded them and will play around with them a little. I am assuming I use DVD Shrink to compress and save the movie, and Decrypter to write the new dvd?

I did try DVD Shrink a couple of nights ago, and it took about an hour to compress and save the movie to my hard drive...is this average time?
