I have a problem hopefully someone can help me with. My 2nd computer cannot get internet access. I am connecting through a Network Everywhere NR41 router. One of my pc's connects fine. They both are running XP. I replaced the cable on PC#2 and it still doesn't work. When I statically assign an IP address on it, I can share files between the two PC's but cannot connect to the internet. If I set PC#2 to 'obtain an IP automatically' I can no longer 'see' PC#2 from PC#1 and it gives me the IP of 169.245.X.X. Also the DHCP table in the router will only show PC#1 when I have it set to automatically see the IP. If I have it set statically, it will show up on the DHCP table but the computer name is 'unknown'. The link light on PC#2 is on. When I have PC#2 set as static IP I can ping PC#1 and the router but still no internet access. Even the loop back IP of 127.0.0.1 works. I am running out of options.Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried rebuilding the IP Stack? Also, you don't have any kind of MAC blocking/authorization running on the router do you?

My method when connecting a new computer into my router is to first make up a IP address and input that to the router as a new static address.

Then I go to the new computer Control Panel>Network Connections>Local Area Connection>Properties>Internet Protocol and fill it out exactly the same as the other computer, except for the new IP address that I put in the router.

Sometimes it gets stubborn and a reboot of the computer helps, even a reboot of the router. It sounds like the problem is in the router not properly ID'ing the new computer.

have you tried hooking computer #2 to the modem, (taking the router out of the picture) to rule out the computer itself.

  5. Make sure the router is used as DHCP server. The IP address of 169.245.x.x tells me that DHCP did NOT assign the IP number and Windows did on it's own (APIPA.)

First, I would enter the router configuration (with MAC addy's in hand in case you need to enter these for any reason) and turn on DHCP. Be sure you enter your internet provider's information correctly.

On both PCs, set Network Connection TCP/IP Properties to "Obtain an IP address automatically." Same for DNS.

On both computers, check your IP configurations. Type "ipconfig /all" from command prompt. Your IP address should be 192.168.x.x If not, type "ipconfig /release" then "ipconnfig /renew" from command prompt. Check "ipconfig /all" again.

If the router is a DHCP server and correctly configured with you internet provider's information and your computer's IP address' start with 192, you should have both internet & intranet access barring any firewalls blocking traffic. Remember, you can only access files & folders that are shared on your computers.

I tried everyone's suggestions and still no go... So, I did some more research and found a program called Winsockxpfix. I tried that and yipee I now have internet on both computers. Every thing is working as it should. Thanks for everyone's help!

Thanks, EGrier. Interesting program. It appears to do a registry repair when adware/trojan removal or corruption of network and Winsock settings has damaged it.
