  1. the disk drive on my ess dvd player is completely unusable. i've been messing around with it, having some successes and many failures. the warranty is past.

i don't know much about fixing dvd players since it's never happened to me before. i don't know if these disk drives are generic. there's a few different drives, i suppose, but the one i'm looking for is like that of the philips dvp 642, since most of you know about that.

is there anywhere i can get a replacement disk drive for it? and about how much would it be? the dvd player was only $40, so if the drive turns out to be way more than that, i might as well go and get another (better) one.

it's the norcent dp220, in case that might help. or maybe a repair guide that'll help?

    thanks.

At $40 you might as well throw it away or hope to find someone on Ebay selling theirs. The typical cost of replacement including shipping is $100.

Out of curiousity, what's wrong with it?

i'll second that...even if it is a standard dvd-rom drive in there the odds of it working as it should aren't very good. get yourself a newer one. Pioneer makes one for 109 that can do dvd/divx/wma/mp3/dvd-audio/sacd

  4. thanks for the replies.

i figured buying replacement parts will cost more than the device itself. i'll probably just get another dvd player, and none of this low-quality brand stuff.

i'll probably keep it around. i might actually gain enough knowledge to fix the thing. and everything else inside works fine.

a lot of stuff went wrong. first it seemed easy. there's some sort of belt (just a rubber band, really) near the front, controlling the gears. somehow it slipped off its gears, causing the tray not to come out or go back in. so playing around with it, pieces were very sensitive and broke ... not that i'm a clumsy person or anything. anyway, once i got the CD to go in and have it read it, the spindle didn't do it's job. i don't know much about how these work, but it seems like that once you put the CD in, the spindle is supposed to lift and carry the CD (then spin), then the laser reads it. the spindle wouldn't do anything.
