    Hi all,

I used to download AVI files and then convert them to VOB files using WinAVI Converter (thus eliminating any chance of audio lag). Then I would bring the VOB files into Nero (add menus, etc.) and leaving it burning overnight.

I recently had to re-format my PC and now Nero 6 doesn't seem to want to build any DVD's!?!?!?

When I try to import a VOB file, Nero either hangs or totally shuts itself down (no error message displayed).

When I try to import an AVI file, Nero hangs and I get the dreaded 'Not Responding' message.

I have tried using a trial copy of Nero 7 and am still getting the same problems (which leads me to think that it is NOT a Nero related problem).

My PC spec is (not that I have changed anything since I used to be able to burn DVD's) :

    OS : Windows XP SP2
    CPU : Celeron 2GHz
    RAM : 512Mb
    HD : 20Gb x 3
    Video : Radeon 7200
    DVD : Philips DVDR885P

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am at the point of considering throwing my PC out of the window.

    Thanking you all in advance.

    Thanks for the reply.

What I don't understand is that my process for burning DVD's worked fine in the past - what is stopping it from working now????

I've had problems with tmpgenc in the past which kind of puts me off using it.

WinAVI Converter has seemed to do the job perfectly.

Could it be a codec problem? Or maybe an XP problem?

tmpgenc dvd author. not the encoder tmpgenc.

if you don't need menus you can just burn the vobs with nero burning rom, new dvd-video. nero burning rom is good for data burning but nerovision is way too buggy.

have you installed any codec packs? they could cause a lot of problems.

or C) all of the above...

FWIW, winxp uses a whatever decoder & related files that happen to talk with each other, & this is also influenced by which files are installed last. Complicating things, windows can't always tell the most recent version of a file, & that may not be the one you want anyway. So unfortunately troubleshooting & hopefully finding a cure can get quite time consuming.

In my experience the easiest way to solve such a problem (assuming all software and updates installed), is to use something like DXman to check all mpg2 related files set as default, eliminating some on a trial & error basis by renaming the files. You also try to register versions of these files that aren't listed in DXman -- if for example you have 2(+) versions of mainconcept files, and a mixture of file versions (installed by different prog) or the wrong files are listed. This is also the basic process advised by Microsoft re: their MovieMaker software.

I've also found it helpful to compare the files in xp's system32 folder & subfolders with those in a backup copy using something like winmatch or microsoft's windiff.

It can take a considerable amount of time. And using another app as Baldrick suggested might well be the preferred or easier route, but you asked why...

  6. why does it take overnight to burn a dvd? If it already converted to VOB's then its just a simple burn, which should just take minutes. I use nerovision and have no problems, once in a while i get a strange avi that wont encode right, but then i just do it in divxtodvd, can you burn any dvd's at all? data/mp3? do you have a error in your log?

    Thanks for all the replies.

This is getting way too complicated!!!!!!

I might try a different burning software and see where I go from there. Any one know what Intervideo WinDVD Creator is like?

It takes all night to burn as I have a habit of putting about 5 hours worth of video on one DVD.

At the moment, all I have tried to do is burn a DVD of TV stuff that I have recently downloaded.
