I'm looking for some information about the Pioneer 533.

I've read all the stories about the TV guide function and the hack to turn it off. My question is, once you get it turned off, are the VCR-like setup of program recording available like the 520? Does it have the 32 manual entry locations with daily, weekly, and one time settings? I mainly want to use this to record shows and time shift, so with my current VCR I typically have 6-8 shows programmed in to record each week. I don't want to lose that. I have the 520 and 533 manuals. The 520 shows how to manually enter programs to record - the 533 manual does not have that. Is it the same though anyway?

    Thanks.

It should be the same. I will post an image of the 633 Menu with several timed recordings.

Here is an example of the "schedule recording" sidebar initiated with the 'Timer Rec' button on the remote. The one Scheduled Recording is in the distant future which is part of the setup that stops the EPG from appearing.

Here are several shows scheduled to record. I am sure you can schedule a bundle of recordings. It the hard drive fills, it will overwrite the earliest recording.

  7. Where does the recorder get the TV Guide information? Is it broadcast over a certain frequency or cable channel?

It is a signal sent over cable in my area.

The technology is based upon broadcasting data to an application usually residing within middleware in a set-top box which connects to the television set and enables the application to be displayed. The technology is predominant in the digital television and radio world, but equally EPGs exist that rely upon analogue technology (using the VBI—or vertical blanking interval). These signals may arrive via cable TV, satellite TV, cable radio, satellite radio, or via over-the-air terrestrial broadcast stations.

Isn't it largely because this info trickles in at a very slow rate that people with the later, EPG-equipped models experience that annoying continuous-HDD-activity problem ? (I'm glad I don't have to deal with this on the 520.)
