Of course, we've all known that already with the infamous problems being reported with SB Live cards. But here is some more proof regarding PCI performance. I am posting this here because people who build PC's on an AMD Athlon need to be aware that they should stay away from VIA. It may affect your capturing performance.
See here:
http://www.tecchannel.de/hardware/817/1.html
If you must build an AMD based computer, use the older AMD761 chipset (or new 760MPX for a dual-CPU), or the latest SiS 745 chipset.
I can't believe VIA stays in business with it's constant releases of buggy products.

Man! This pisses me off!
@Kdiddy & Valnar - I have been trying to capture at 640x480 (using Huffy OR PicVideo in VDub) for months with no success! I can do 480x480 with no problems...my system:
950 Duron (on a VIA chipset)
512 MB of RAM
10 Gig OS Drive
60 Gig Capture Dive
Now I don't drop any frames at 640x480, but the quality sucks...lines everywhere...is it possible that my sorry ass VIA chipset is causing this?
Any help would be much appreciated...I have been slamming at this thing for MONTHS with no success... -
"Lines everywhere" is normal. You are probably capturing it from an interlaced source to a progressive monitor. This is normal. If you want to burn a DVD or SVCD, you need to leave the interlacing intact. It'll look fine on your TV, don't worry.
However, if the lines are excessive, even when there is no movement, then you may have the fields reversed. This is an option under most capture programs to switch the fields during capture.
Good luck.
PS. The VIA chipset may not be causing this particular problem, but it still sux nonetheless.

I have an AMD 1.4G, ASUS m/b with the VIA chipset. I capture Fullscreen PAL with an TNT2 Ultra, without dropping a single frame, ever.
-
I have a similar problem when capturing to AVI at high resolution. I too have a VIA chipset.
My solution is to capture straight to MPEG2 with Ulead Meadia Studio Pro 6 at a bitrate of 6000Kpbs then re-encode to SVCD with TMPGEnc.
I capture at 480x576 with great quality using only a
Duron 750 and WINTV card.

Alright alright then! There are some lines with no movement...but not many...so why does 480x480 look good and 640x480 doesn't? I don't have any lines on 480x480...just a question...I am always eager to learn from the experts...thanks a ton, by the way

I have been getting jagged lines around edges of moving objects on my vhs capturing using DC10+. Sometimes on all edges even not moving but mostly on moving stuff. Looks like short lines on the edges and makes small moving objects, like a hand, look like they are made of of lines with some missing. Are these the type of lines you are talking about. I have been struggling trying to figure out this problem. I'm new at this. Does it with the software that came with the card and VirtualDub. In VirtualDub I don't see it in the preview window but it's in the file. I see it in the preview window and the file in the software that came with the DC10+. If the lines look like retrace lines then that's not my problem.

Hmmm....
I have a 1000 Mhz Duron, VIA chipset, 256 DDR ram, etc...I have so far only found one shortfall to my VIA chipset... WinXP drivers (at least from BIOSTAR) have been lacking.
I will have to keep an eye out on this board, I haven't noticed any problems capturing 640x480. I drop a frame or two per half hour, but only when recording from VHS. Probably a bad Sync signal, rather than hardware issue.

Lot's of people I see are now realizing where most of the compatibility issues are coming from: VIA. I've been away from the forums for a long while, but that was one of the issues I tried to drill into people months back... if you get a VIA chipset board for an Intel OR AMD processor, you could be in for a world of hurt. Some people have had excellent luck, but if you choose to go that route, BE PREPARED to update your BIOS and drivers, perhaps on a regular basis to find the right combination that works with your other hardware.
Just for those who didn't know - there's a VIA chipset stability hack/patch available through http://www.viahardware.com (fan/tech site) that might help with those dealing with high-speed data transfer issues. Normally, this only affects hard drive and CD-ROM data transfer as well as bursts of audio data to and from those notorious (dreaded IMO) Creative Labs sound cards, but with video capture and streaming MEGABYTES over the PCI bus each second, it's bound to take an occasional hit too!
BTW: many of the people that are having VIA chipset issues also have nVidia video cards. I have an older system I use for low res capture that had no real issues even though it has a VIA chipset... that is until I tried to install a GeForce 3. Ouch! Bus traffic stalls at times and my sound was affected in "squawks"... the driver hack I mentioned from viahardware took care of the majority of the problem, but didn't fix it under the most extreme conditions. My solution? I pulled the GF3 and dropped in my old S3 video card... oh-well. I'll keep the GF3 for the new computer I'm building I guess! (And yes, I know about the new/old GF2/3 driver trouble on VIA chipsets... I do believe it was something different!)

I agree. For the people who are reading this thread with a VIA chipset mobo- Just because you aren't exhibiting any problems doesn't mean they don't exist. Perhaps you have a non-nVidia graphics card and non-Creative Labs sound card. And maybe you aren't pushing massive amounts of data through your PCI bus. But the problem is still there.
I can't believe VIA accounts for 90%+ of the chipsets made for AMD and around 40%+ for Intel. I just don't understand how people keep buying them. I hope SiS takes off.

I'm not thrilled with SIS right now.
I just got a new MB (ECS K7S5A) and I cannot install XP or 2000 with it.
98 installs fine.
I've changed my display card, et al but no go.
ECS tech support hasn't been able to help either so far.
So I coulden't reccommend running out and buying one at this point. -
Huh? Good point. I'm building a dual AMD system right now, and the only reason I will tolerate AMD is because they made the chipset too. If the only dual-AMD option was VIA, I'd stick with a single P4.

"I just got a new MB (ECS K7S5A) and I cannot install XP or 2000 with it"
Which BIOS are you running on it?...Ive had the same motherboard running for a few months with 98, 2000, and XP all running fine on it, however, it is not an overlcokcing friendly board....Tomshardware also rated the SIS chipset the best performer for the $$ of those that are capable with the Athlon XP...he only real issue some of the revisions this board had is with the Power supply, I would recommend at least a 300W supply, even though my 250W is working just fine. Ive seen many of its so called problems cleared up with a changed in power supply.

To: H@Mouse,...
I saw your post about he Via Hardware patch. I went to the site, since I have the Via chipsset, but I found that there was more than 100 patches for various OS's, etc.
Which specific patch are you suggesting would provide some help. Also, I'm running Win ME and most of the patches I saw there were for Win2000 or XP. These OS's have been known to need special drivers for just about everything.
Thanks for bringing up these issues as all of us that have the KT7 motherboard and are using AMD chipsets need to get these issues resolved if we ever expect to succeed at this video capture effort. Thanks in advance.
"Technology",...It's what keeps us all moving forward. -
kdiddy, I appreciate your reply.
But overclock this board? Heck, I can't even get it to run XP using the default safe bios settings.
I've tried the bios that it shipped with, the latest bios (121501l?), and currently an older bios (011016l)
I suppose this is why tech support was stumped, others have run XP with this board with no problem.
Even though I was able to install 98, I suspect I have a defective board.
I had the same problem trying to install 2000. Both operating systems use acpi, so my guess is it might have something to do with that.
I came across the other board a few days ago, but was not able to find any posts similar to my problem.

Hey guys I had a Asus mo board and with via chipset, the graph card is a Matrox Marvel. it also had a raid controller on Board. My capture device is a firewire card.
This Board could not handle Dv video at all I had all sorts of probs with it, and in the end I took it back and got a Gigabyte with Via chipset and Dual Bios...
I set it up with all same hardware as before and it Rocks.... the speed is very fast and running Med Pro 6.5 its a dream to use.....
Flack.
