Earlier I posted about my new Plextor 740A acting strangely in relation to burning speed. Well, I decided to venture to their web site (plextor.com) and check out their downloads section. They released a new firmware version (1.02) as of 1/6/05. I installed it, and I've successfully burned 10 or so DVDs at their rated speed instead of strange behavior like 8x taking longer than 4x, so if you have one of these burners, definitely upgrade the firmware.

your plextor 740a is a REBADGED BENQ 1640 drive.
crossflash it to the OFFICIAL BENQ FIRMWARE and you'll be able to use the tool called, "QSUITE", to tweak your burns. Check out the BENQ FORUM at Cdfreaks.com. -
Another thing to remember about firmware updates is that it may not solve the 'problems' with different types of media.
For example, my BenQ will burn Ty 8x at 16x, but may only burn other 8x at 4x, 8x or even 12x.
Just merely the firmware update didn't include 'upgrading' the media you are using....
Just thought I'd mention that (to everyone) cause alot of people seem to think that a firmware update should cure ALL their problems.
