  1. Hello Major,
I switched from the PC to the Mac now 2.5 years ago and never regretted it thanks to a good deal of programs for video editing; however, yours was The One I could employ for any of my compression problems.
I have two primary workflows for which I'm using ffmpegX extensively and quite successfully: digital TV to mencoder Xvid in .avi format and DVDs to mencoder H.264 in .mp4 format.
With the huge surprise yesterday at the EXPO, I'm thinking of buying the new MacBook Pro (ugh, what an ugly name...), because it should allow me to use my data acquisition programs (run only with windows) natively and abandon Virtual PC.
All of this will be for naught however, if your program cannot run on this new monster: so here my questions:

    1. Will there be a universal binary of your program, or will it have to (or can it not?) run on Rosetta?
    2. What about all the different binaries like mencode, ffmpeg, ... that are used in your aplication?

    Thanks for the reply.

    Sincerely yours,
    Arnaut

  2. For both, I will need to buy a new Mac and recompile everything on it. I'll probably do that.

    Major,

To show my support for your efforts, I've just registered using the link at your website. Hopefully, this will help (in a small way) pay for your new "Core Duo" Mac.

Thanks again for providing such a valuable app!

  4. Thank you, it is much appreciated.

I registered. Was totally worth it

Edit: major, can't you simply compile for Intel in XCode and then have a private beta for interested Intel users?

No, because all binaries have to be recompiled too in the new environment. Some of them will probably lack optimizations at first. It is a consequent work, not just enabing a checkbox in XCode.

    How about ffmpegX under rosetta?

    Should it work?

    Anyone tried it?

The new iMacs started shipping yesterday. I'm sure it won't be too long before we get some reports. However, if any of the code is calling Altivec (Velocity Engine) functions, it won't work. Rosetta is for apps that -don't- call upon those functions. For example: MS Office works fine under Rosetta but FCP won't.

  9. Next week TNT will bring to me my brand new Mac mini Intel CoreDuo 1,6GHz 8)

I'll post about perfomances under Rosetta, stay tuned

@ major If you desire I can leave you an ssh account on the mini (il use it as a 24/7 private server) to start testing you binaries; just ask if interested
    Cesare G.
ffmpegX registered and much satisfied user 8)
