Different Mics for different problems. Describe what you are trying to do in this "independent film".

Serious folk generally use a separate sound guy with a boom holding the mic in close just out of video frame. Connection can be wire or wireless.

AFAIK Panasonic GS19 doesn't have a microphone input, so I guess you're stuck with the built-in microphone.

Another option is to get a good mic (wireless lav or boom as in picture in previous post) and record to another source, like a minidisc recorder. You then have to make sure you slate the beginning and end of each shot ("like they do in the movies") so you are able to sync the two soundtracks. Then replace the camera's sound with the track recoded on the external recorder when you edit.
If you're serious about making a film, the onboard mic your GS-19 is not going to give you adequate sound unless you're within a few feet of your subject. Any more than that and you get too much reflected sound.
Check out www.dv.com -- they have lots of info on cameras, audio, etc. The guy who hosts their audio forum has a number of books out (and free articles you can access thru the site) that go into great depth on creating good audio for digital video. His name is Jay Rose, and his stuff is absolutely excellent. I got a copy of "Producing Great Sound for Digital Video" and it is the probably the most useful book I have ever read in my life. -
Oops -- I meant to say I got "Audio Post Production for Digital Video", not Producing Great Sound...

I bought a Rode Video Mic a few months ago and it's fabulous. It's got a 3.5mm plug, hot shoe mount, wind cut function, and it can be used as either a desktop mike or mounted on a boom pole. Google it. It's great (and cheap).
