hi, are there any freeware programs out there that will convert real media (video) files to avi or mpeg? I'm looking for something simple (that doesn't require extracting audio or anything like that). I had ultra RM converter but that doesn't work for larger rm files.

    thanks

Really, I can do the whole thing in about 2 minutes (setting it up, I mean, not the actual transfer/reencode).

I wonder which part you actually read? Maybe I need to write a new guide making small improvements on Baldrick's version, feeding straight to QuEnc or TMPGEnc...

Just re-read Baldrick's guide, it's perfect as is, except maybe you need to read the LAST message as well.

Then pick one of the "covert to VCD using VirtualDub" guides and you should be able to figure out what to do next.

Or do you really need a specific guide to hold your hand every step of the way?

Sorry, "something like" doesn't help us diagnose your problem one bit.

And WHERE in the guide I linked to even MENTIONED "Windows Media (player?)" ? Are we even talking about the same problem?

DirectShowSource: could not open as video or audio

video returned: "DirectShowSource:could not open file c:\Desktop\rm\3227_04.rm an object or name was not found

audio returned: "DirectShowSource:could not open file c:\Desktop\rm\3227_04.rm an object or name was not found

    according to Baldrik's guide...

"Open the video.avs with Windows Media Player and it should play.

You can now import the video.avs file in for example Virtualdub, Tmpgenc, Windows Media Encoder or most other editors. When you import the file in your tool select All files under Files of type to see the .avs file. "

Good, we're now talking about the same problem.

Is Real Alternative installed? Did you try opening the RM file in WMP?

yes i have it installed. i don't have real media installed though, cause when i installed real alternative it told me i should uninstall it. i tried opening the rm file with wmp and it said that it couldn't open it. one or more codecs may needed to play the file.

When you install Real Alternative, it told you to uninstall itself? That makes no sense at all...

No, sounds like if you have Real Player installed and you install Real Alt, it tells you to uninstall Real Player.

Makes sense since they con conflict. But then if you already have Real Player installed, why bother with Real Alt? Just install Gabest's dshow real filter.

i would wait on that...at first it didn't work for me. i went to the forums for the super1 and read that the guy who made it didn't put the codecs for real player in the right folders, so you have to manually move it. So I wouldn't put a listing for it until he changes it in the next update like he said he would.

Sorry for the confusion, but basically, yes, we mean the splitter (which is ALSO the video/audio decoder for Real Media in DirectShow).
