My old post about this topic is gone, I assume it got deleted? and I don't know why. If I did anything wrong, I apologize in advance.
I downloaded a video clip, and the site says the needed video codec is DivX. I don't know if the vid clip is AVI or not, but its file name is xxxxx.avi.009 (it's a concert that I was dl-ing, and it's in parts, and that "009" is the 9th part of the entire concert).
I have K-lite Mega Codec Pack installed, it includes DivX. I tried to open the vid clip, but couldn't. I tried to identify file type and see what codec I was missing with GSpot, but GSpot doesn't even support it. It says File Type Unknown. I tried to open it with VLC Media Player and VirtualDub, didn't work.
I googled the problem, it said the reasons I couldn't open a vid clip it's either because it hadn't finished downloading, or it didn't have the correct codec installed.
My problem now is that I don't know what the vid clip's file type is and how to open and play it.
I need help, your help would be deeply appriciated. Thank you in advanced.![]()

Was your original post the one that got reported here ?
https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1440907#1440907If in doubt, Google it.

when I dl it, it's not in a folder or WinRar or Winzip; it's a single file=vid clip. I don't know what program they used to break it in parts, but can I use WinRar to combine them into a single huge file?
What do I do? highlight all and compress to the same WinRar? I tried compressing other DVD rmvbs=part a and part b (not this vid clip), but didn't work. It's still 2 separate files in the compressed WinRar. Or should I compress one by one, then Extract them at once into a single folder? btw, how do u break a file in parts using WinRar? is it possible since it could combine.

I'd suggest you go back to your source (ie. where you dl'ed it from) and give them what for. Alternatively, look around and see if they mention anywhere about joining files obtained from them.
If in doubt, Google it.

I could use VirtualDub to join, but I couldn't even open the file. I just used GSpot to check my xxx.avi.001, the successful part; GSpot says
File Type: Ogg Media
Mime Type: application/x-ogg
The Following combination of filters was used:
(Src) -->[DivX Decoder Filter]>--(A)-->[Video Renderer]
(Src) -->[Vorbis Decoder]>--(A)-->[Default DeirectSound Device]
I assume all the parts are the same type.

Oh, you wanted me to change the 001.avi to 001.ogm? I thought you wanted me to change other part's extentions. I changed the 001.avi to 001.ogm, and it worked, but others don't.
And what do you mean by "Do you have the library necessary to play OggVorbis audio files?"
And when I made the vid 001 without extension, it's playable. And I saw a green DirectVobSub arrow icon and a DivX Setting Manager icon at the right of my taskbar.

Okay, what are the "others" that you're talking about? What filenames and extensions do they have? And what did GSpot say about them?
-
Since 001 vid clip is OGM, I assume all parts are in OGM, but hom come GSpot only recognizes 001, and doesnt support other 002 vid clip, 003 vid clip...etc.

The original files names that I directly downloaded from the site are
Concert.avi.001
Concert.avi.002
Concert.avi.003
Concert.avi.004
Concert.avi.005
Concert.avi.006
Concert.avi.007
Concert.avi.008
Concert.avi.009
Concert.avi.010
Concert.avi.011
A total of 11 parts in the entire concert
for Concert.avi.002 to Concert.avi.11, GSpot v2.52 shows

Proposed Codec Solutions and Tests
Rendering failed. Following is the error reported by DirectShow:
0x800402265: Cannot play back the file. The format is not supported.

It's oviuosly a splitup file (possibly compressed), and has to be joined back somehow. Without knowledge of how it was split, it's hard to tell how it should be put back together.

You could join them with a program like Filemerger. It works with about any format. Then try renaming the extension to whatever you want. You should be able to open OGM or AVIs in VirtualDub Mod.
http://home.planet.nl/~doesw008/filemerger.html
But the original files may be corrupted and that may be the problem.
-
I'm guessing that the file header is in the first part, and the rest of the parts only have binary streams that are not recognized.
One way to merge them would be just to do binary copy, like
Code:Copy /B A.001+A.002+A.003 TEMP1.AVI Copy /B TEMP1.AVI+A.004+A.005+A.006 TEMP2.AVI

start->run
put cmd in the field and hit enter
type the copy command from above in the window that opensRead my blog here.

funnybunny, I use Filemerger to join split files from newsgroups. They are often named like 'file.avi.01', 02, etc. You just load them all in the program in numeric order then tell it to save it (in this case) to a new name like 'newfile.avi' and it joins them together and puts that extension at the end of the filename.
It's basically made to join files that have been split into parts, similar to .rar files. It's just a simple joiner program that eliminates working in DOS if you want to join files. It works similar to a binary join that kschang mentions. It won't damage the original files. I've used it with MPEG, AVI files.

I tried the cmd method, but here's what I got.
