Grab super to start with ... it may be what you need to convert those avi's , and yes , it can do them straight to vob's if required .
If not , you may not have the correct decoder's installed , if they play it shouldn,t be a problem .
If avi to vob success , demux using vobedit .
Convert ac3 to wav using besweet .
Load m2v into subtitleworkshop , you'll get an acurate frame time stamp .
Ie , 00:00:00.000 .
Use hyper time strecher to increase or decrease audio length , safer to be a little long .
Audiocity can trim this to exact length .
Convert this new wav to ac3 using besweet .
Use ifoedit to author dvd , add m2v , new ac3 , sellect output folder , and go ... after , "get vts sector" , and save .
Repeat for next avi ....
Very time consuming ... dosent help when it come's to vbr audio , takes twice as long .
when all converted .
----------------------------------------------
Rename vob 1 to vts_01_000
Rename vob 2 to vts_01_001
ect ..
Vob 10 become's vts_01_010 ...
Place all vobs in same folder .
Open first vob via vobedit .
Go to file , join vobs .
Select new folder for output , and go .
---------------------------------------------------
Use ifoedit "creat ifo's"
Leave settings alone , choose that new vob , now vts_01_0 .
Let it rip .
After , check info in both vts_01_0.ifo , abd vts_ts.ifo
Check video info , and audio info , correct where needed .
Now "get vts sectors"
Then save .
Playback on pc before burning to dvd-r .... enjoy . -

This may or may not help... A vob file is just a container, though in creating them you might have solved your compatibility prob by encoding to mpg2. Once they're the same format, you can use several tools & methods to string them together on a DVD, or possibly combine them into one large mpg2 file. Several solutions have been offered so far -- probably more coming -
Simplest way to join any VOB files into one big file is use VOBMerge
Its freeware, and as a byproduct will also join ANY file. Just choose all files from the file selector and when asked for the output file, just change the filename and add the file extension that you are joining
EG If its a collection of MP3, add xxxx.mp3
Dead simple, I've used it to join video and audio files -
