Go for it. I got my Toshiba for $80 to use with my 50 inch DLP and it even plays Divx. I can't tell the difference in quality between an upconverted DVD and a movie coming from my hi-def HBO feed. I think it's due to the natural grainyness of film. I am getting more convinced that both HD-DVD and BluRay will fail. There just isn't that much better quality to be achieved for all of the hassle.

One hint: Get your HDMI cable online from the likes of newegg or geeks.com. The retail price runs $80-100 which is more than the player itself. Online they can be had for $20.

  3. I've been using a Bravo D1 upscaling DVD player with my 46" DLP for a couple of years now and it produces an awesome picture. Some discs like LOTR look almost as good as true HD sources. No analog DVD player even comes close. Fixed pixel widescreen HDTV's like your DLP really benefit greatly from upscaling DVD players. There are several inexpensive HDMI equipped upscaling players on the market now, with more being introduced all the time. There are even some DVD recorders with upscaling HDMI output available now.

i'm afraid i still don't understand how this upconverting works...if we were talking about taking a lower res mpeg file and wanting to upconvert it to a higher resolution we'd just be stretching it and losing quality...how is this different? How does it truly make the picture a higher resolution?

  7. It doesn't...... The data just isn't there. It's like using a digital zoom on a camera.

I have the Oppo myself. Very nice player, excellent picture.

As for upconversion, there are a couple of other posts somewhere in the forum explaining exactly how it works. Depending on the chipset used to create the upconversion, the picture definitely looks better.
