Hi
My mate wants to get an external DVD R/W for his laptop , which would be best, one that uses firewire or will USB 2 be quick enough?
How would USB 2 compare speedwise to burn a movie as opposed to a standard internal dvd r/w?

Definitely Firewire all the way.
Firewire is faster than USB 2.0 in real applications and alot more stable than USB 2.0 too. -
It is generally better to use firewire but the relevant factor is the chipset. Many drives will just not work with some chips and others work only at 8X.
The best choice is here:

OK,
So if it takes me about 15mins to burn a DVD at 4 speed on my PC
How long would it take on an external USB 2 device?I dunno...it might work -
