I did a forum search and couldn't find what I was looking for. feel free to link me to the appropriate thread if necessary.

anyway, I have the philips dvp 642/37 player with the 0531 firmware but I've yet to hack my system. my main questions about this player are:

-is the 7-8-9-OK-0 hack a one time hack that I don't have to worry about? or do I have to continuously apply the hack everytime I want to watch a R2 disc?

-i'm assuming the NTSC to PAL conversion is automatic correct? once the system has been hacked I'm supposed to go into the system menu and select NTSC right?

-i'm assuming the newer dvp 642 models (in the white box) still use the 7-8-9-OK-0 hack and only have different firmware correct? i'm wondering if I should buy myself a backup system just in case - they're only $60.

  2. Yes, the hack for region free is one time only. You can even change back to the original region should wish, then change back to region free. For NTSC/Pal you just set the player to the same as your tv and then it automatically converts. I am not sure about the newer models, mine is about one year old. I do not see any reason why it would not work. As for a back up, there are always newer models coming out, so replacing it shouldn't be a problem. My vote would be to wait.

well, I tried the 7-8-9-OK-0 hack and I think it worked. I saw the '0' at the bottom of the tv screen so i'm assuming my player is now region free. I won't know for sure until I get my R2 discs in the mail.

another question, i've downloaded a few things that are in avi format, is there a way to convert them to mpegs or divx formats so that I can burn them to disc and watch them on my dvd player? i've used DivX doctor II.1 to convert avi files to quicktime files, at least I think they're quicktime files - once they're converted there'es an "m 1" tag appended to the end of the file but i'm able to watch them in quicktime. i'm also on a mac - is there any free software conversion software available?

  6. Converters are almost always in the formats you want to convert. Eg.
    avi2dvd
    avi2mpg
    mpg2avi

Btw, avi is just a container, it's already probably in dvix format for your 642.

    thanks, handyguy.

btw, do any of you ever have problems playing region 2 discs from asia? i'm wondering if it's just my player.

  8. I dont have any asia disks tho. What happens when you play it?

Sometimes playing other region disks the picture looks weirdo but pushing system menu button 2 times corrects this.

before I hacked my system I tried playing a Sin City bootleg and it stuttered and then froze up on me 3/4 of the way through. my copy of jackie chan's wheels on meals also pauses during a few scenes in the film, but I know someone else who has the same problem so it could just be the film itself. lastnight however I tried checking a R2 Pal disc from Asia on my player and the movie showed just fine but early on in the movie it stuttered and then froze on me just like the Sin City bootleg, luckily I was able to skip to the next scene and watch the rest of the movie without any problems. i'm not sure if this R2 disc was a bootleg or not but if it was then my player definitely doesn't like it.

i'm still waiting for my R2 discs to arrive from the UK, this was I can test my player and see if they experience the same glitches as the R2 disc from Asia.

  11. More likely than not, you're unit is overheating. Pay special attention not to put anything over or under it (e.g. cable box, VCR, etc.). Give it lots of breathing room and it should play okay.

I don't know about that. so far it only does this for asian made discs, all of my other R1 discs work just fine.
