I ripped a DVD using DVD Decrypter, and when I play the VOB file, the aspect ratio is wrong (too wide). When I play the DVD, it looks fine. Is there a setting I can choose in DVD Decrypter that affects this?

What are you using to play it? DVD player software or WMP?

The origianl DVD plays fine in both a hardware DVD player and on a PC using software from Intervideo and Ahead. The ripped file on the PC plays with the wide aspect ratio using the same PC software.

What do you mean, too wide ? DVD is created with one of two aspect ratios 4:3 (either fullscreen or letterboxed widescreen) or 16:9 (generally widescreen, although it could be pillarboxed).

DVD Decrypter does not affect aspect ratio. It could be that your DVD player and software player have been configured to incorrectly display widescreen material as Pan and Scan, but you would have to look at how they have been set up - somewhere in their menus.

The width is too wide when I play a ripped VOB file with PC software. It is distorted (not scaled properely in the correct proportions), not just widescreen. If I use the same software to play the DVD, it is less wide (correct proportions). If I use the same software to play other ripped VOB files from other discs, it looks fine.

Have you tried playing back using the IFO files. This is one of the key points that tells players what the aspect ratio is

If I rip in File mode, that works. What I was trying to do was rip in ISO mode and then trim with MPEG Video Wizard. How can I trim a VOB file and maintain the correct aspect ratio? Is there a work-around? This is the only DVD I have had this problem with.

First, why rip in ISO mode to do this ?

You could rip in file mode or IFO mode and set file splitting to none. This should give you one by VOB to work with. I believe that videoredo or mpeg VCR preserve the aspect ratio, but if not you can always use DVD aptcher or restream to correct the AR afterwards.

  10. Load the file(s) that doesn't play correctly in Restream to look for the aspect ratio. If it is not 4:3 or 16:9 somewhere in the process it is changed. You can of course to change it with restream, but the output would be elementary mpeg2 video stream. Probably DVDPatcher is better to use.
