I recently bought a new computer. If I use virtualdub to capture analog video, it always drop about 20 frames an hour when capturing from a high quality source. If I use virtualvcr to capture the same source, it gets 0 dropped frames. Both do a pretty good job at keeping audio in sync unless the source is poor (several dropped frames); in this case virtualvcr loses audio sync while virtualdub keeps sync. I've use virtualdub for years and I hate to make it my second string for capturing. Any ideas why it drops frames on good sources? Thanks for reading this!

I'd search for prob capturing with your capture hardware & V/dub here, in the V/Dub.org forum, doom9 etc...

If I remember correctly, VirtualDub uses VFW drivers (Win98 vintage), while VirtualVCR uses WMA drivers (Win2k vintage).
I use VirtualDub for everything EXCEPT capturing. I use VirtualVCR for that.ICBM target coordinates:

Just curious but have you (the original poster) tried capturing with the software that came with the capture card? Do you get the same drop rate or do you just not like the interface?

Family Man,
virtualvcr syncs the audio with the video by dynamically changing the sample rate of the audio, that's why it can sometimes work better for A/V Sync than other progs. VirtualDub prior to the latest stable build will drop video frames to keep sync with the audio, 20 dropped frames spread out throughout an hour or two of capture is virtually unnoticeable, but audio and video out of sync sure is!! There is a modded version of VirtualDub called VirtualDub VCR Sync (www.virtualdub.net) that also changes the sample rate on the fly instead of dropping video frames to maintain sync.
If I'm not mistaken the latest build of VirtualDub (1.6) also allows this option as well and also supports WDM capture like virtualvcr does. -
Latest virtualdub version do many things, but if you have older hardware, I suggest to stick with older (1.5) versions....
I use virtualdub for capturing. Only rarelly VirtualVCR. It's a bit tricky to make it work with w2k and winXP, but with a little workaround remains the best solution IMOLa Linea by Osvaldo Cavandoli

I actually now prefer Virtual VCR for capturing. What I really like is the ability to save and load settings profiles. So I use one for capturing PAL, and one for capturing NTSC (and a couple of others for special settings). It also makes a log of dropped frames (if any). You can use that log to insert frames back into your video of you need to to keep sync.

The main factor in capture is CPU and hard drive speed, meaning it has to get to your hardisk fast enough not to drop frames. Use USB2 or firewire then check for DMA make sure your drives are fastest DMA possible , use a hard drive that receives only if you have more than one. If you still get dropped frame try diff codecs that takes less time to process or bring down the resolution ,capture in AVI etc. On computer side you can optimize your system or overclock it a bit. Don't use the computer while capturing if your computer doesn't have enough power. I just checked you have good specs on your computer, something is slowing it down exit your other programs, clean out spyware, exclude your capture software from anti-virus scan etc

Thanks for all of the replies. Unfortunately right after I posted my question I had to take my graphics card into the shop so I cannot use my computer to do more capture tests. I read on vdub's site that vdub will purposefully drop or freeze a frame to keep audio in sync. I tried vdub 1.6 before things came unglued and it had the same problems and even more. It would either unexpectly abort or lock up while capturing. Maybe there are some new settings I'm missing. When my rig gets back together I'll post a better follow-up.
