    Hi Guys.

I am trying to encode my DV video into Xvid. You will probably say dont do this, etc etc but this is how I want to do it and I think it gives really good quality because I don't want to split the avi to fit multiple dvd r's.

Anyway I'm encoding with VirtualDub and about 13 minutes or so, The computer will freeze. I tried a couple of time with no luck

    What's going on ?

It just freezes ? No error messages ? Just Lock up ?

Firs thought (given so little to go on) over heating or memory problems.

Over-heating is easy to diagnose. Take the covers off your PC (or open the top if it's a desktop PC) and point a standard desk fan into the guts of the machine. Turn it on and let it blow through while you try your next encode. If everything works, heat was your problem and all you need to do is get some decent cooling into your machine.

If it still locks up, it's onto the next idea.

If XVID freezes, try Microsoft MPEG4 V3 codec (should be already on the PC if you have WMP9 or 10). It should offer compression similar to that of XVID (albeit slightly more bloated).

It may also help if you get the latest XVID binaries. I believe one was released just around Christmas

XviD is one of the best stress testers out there. Also, like all things PC components ware out. So even if your RAM was good, it doesn't mean that it is now.

You could try some other stress/RAM testers.

Reformating won't fix hardware problems. If that is what it is.

I'm 99.9 percent sure it's nothing to do with my hardware.

Every XviD crashing post I have seen starts off like that. 99.9% sure it isn't the hardware. Always turns out to be the hardware though.

Still there is a possibility that it isn't hardware releated. I'd still suggest that you test your RAM.
