I am new at video editing. What external harddrive size do I really need?
I will probably be shooting 2 party's a month with my mini dv camcorder in the summer?

Figure 13GB/Hr of DV. Double that for editing times the amount of video you want to keep on the hard drive.

Or to make it simpler, go for a 160 to 300GB hard drive and you can't go wrong.

You can't add another internal drive? That's much simpler.

If you go external, I would look into a external SATA box and drive. You will need a SATA card, though, with a external hookup.

Here's some to look at: http://www.cwol.com/serial-ata/sata-drive-enclosures.htm

Or you can go with a Firewire card and external box and drive. I wouldn't recommend USB, Firewire has less problems.

That should work well for you. It's nice to have both Firewire and USB. I use Firewire almost exclusively for my laptop and I have no problems. USB is handy for connecting to other computers occasionally.
