What's your source material? How do you process it from source file to finished DVD?

Many encoders have problems with VBR audio - this could be the situation here. Also, many AVIs have bad frames and stuff that makes 'em almost impossible to convert to anything else, even if they play fine as AVI.
Try something besides Nero - divx2dvd seems like a popular choice for those who prefer oneclickwonder apps.

A GSpot of the AVI file will probably tell the story a whole lot clearer
    If in doubt, Google it.

I tried the gspot and all codecs were fine.
I'll try divx2dvd... but if anyone has an idea about this problem please report.
    Thanks

Did GSpot say anything about VBR audio?
Really, IMO, taking any AVI, dropping it onto some random AVI-to-DVD app, and expect it to come out without a hitch, is to be overly optimistic...

    If in doubt, Google it.

vbr audio? i don't understand... it sais that i have 3 compatible audio codecs.
I like nero because it permits to make a preview of audio, video and subtitles.
    I'm sorry to bother you...

That you get both audio and video (albeit out of sync) makes it clear that you have the required codecs.
VBR audio = Variable BitRate audio. Very nice and efficient, but a PITA when it comes packaged in an AVI, and you want to do anything with the AVI besides watching it. Unfortunately, very common.

This is what i see in the audio bitrate window and
    48000 Hz
    is in the Fs window.

Yup, that's VBR audio, alright. Like I said, some apps handle this better than others...
I'd extract audio to wav using Goldwave, then encode it to AC3 with ffmpeggui.
Then encode video only to DVD specs m2v, author AC3 + m2v to DVD

so i'll need goldwave, ffmpeggui to work with audio.
and what do you recommend to work with video and then mix audio, video and subtitles?
    Thanks in advance

For video, there are many encoders out there:
TMPGEnc, CCE, Mainconcept (commercial) quenc (free)
The "mixing" is done when authoring:
TMPGEnc DVD Author (doesn't support subtitles), DVD-Lab for commercial options, DVDAuthorGUI, GUI For DVDAuthor (free alternatives, both handle .srt subs IIRC)

There are many guides to read left under CONVERT for AVI to DVD, which may suggest different methods and tools.

I'm having an audio sync problem as well. It's after converting .wmv to mpeg2. What if the video has already been converted to mpeg2, would I have to start over from the source file (the wmv file) in order to fix the sync problem the way that was mentioned here?

Also after authoring to AC3 + m2v to dvd can I put the video/music file back to mpeg for menu creation?

Yup, that's VBR audio, alright. Like I said, some apps handle this better than others...

You can use AC3 Delay Corrector to fix sync problems after encoding, assuming the problem is simply a delay issue. If the problem is caused by other issues - corruption, bad frames, format conversion - then you need to determine what the cause is before you can fix it.

If you authoring software cannot use elementary streams (i.e. must have an mpeg file) then get a new authoring tool.

I suspect this is some form of stupid EU restriction. You may have to google for alternate links.

I get to softpedia ok, but then both external mirrors (1 and 2) give me a file not found error, and the softpedia mirror bombs out looking for a local referer. This is in both FF and IE.

[edit] A google search turned up this though - http://www.free-codecs.com/download/AC3_Delay_Corrector.htm [/edit]

    Hurrah

I've just worked out how to do it. Had the same problems. Tried everything, then discovered this formula.

It'll only work for films that start in sync and go progressively out.

    [film length(secs) + seconds out of sync]/ film length(secs) * playback rate

This gives you a new playback rate to change in goldwave. Change new playback rate and then resample back to original afterwards.

The resulting wav file should be in sync. The hardest bit is guessing how many seconds it's out at the end.

Thought it might help cos its being getting on my tits for ages.
