I need to do alot of converting and joining of video, some of the video is large, but it seems to be somewhat time consuming on my computer. Do I need to add more memory, would that decrease the time? I only have 256mb right now

512 is a bare minimum in my opinion. I think you will notice a large difference if you move up to that, not so much difference (if any) if you go to 1024.

Windows XP requires around 220mb just for itself and a few essentials (antivirus, firewall etc). Doesn't leave you much room to do anything else, does it.

  5. Sorry to throw a spanner in the works but the main question here should be 'which bits are causing the delay?'.

If it's the joining, extra memory will not help at all as it's simply moving data around the hard drives. The only ways to speed this up are
1: add another drive if it's a single drive machine and do the copies from one drive to another
    or
2: switch over to a 'striped volume' so it's writing part files to two disks.
3: upgrade to fast SCSI disks

If the speed problem is in converting, the only solution there is to throw a faster CPU at it.

Don't get me wrong.....Memory helps all main functions of Windows. But if the hassles are as I described above, memory will have only a small impact.

    Have fun,
    Ian
