  1. I bought a BenQ DW1640 16X DVD+/-RW Drive from eWiz.com. It shows up in my Device Manager as BENQ DVD DC DQ60. Does that sound right?

When I bought this thing, I did a plug-n-play installation, and every worked perfectly. It's still somewhat new, so I've probably only ripped/burned 10 disks or so.

Yesterday, the drive started running REALLY slow. Ripping a movie with DVDshrink (no compression), it was running at about 1.5 kbps. Took well over an hour to rip.

Same thing with burning in Nero Express 6. It says it's burning at 16X, but it took 2.5 hours to do a standard < 4.5 GB movie burn.

I'd tell you my firmware version, but I'm not sure how to find out.

    AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.20 GHz
    1 GB Ram
    Win XP Pro (fully updated)
Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 4.7GB, 16X, Silver Inkjet Printable from Rima.com

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

  3. Okay, I'm actually a little nervous about the name thing.

My receipt from eWiz.com says I ordered:

    [PG] BenQ DW1640 16X DVD+/-RW Drive W/ Nero (Black), Bulk Part # DW1640B

I popped the drive out and looked at it, and it definitely says DQ60 on it.

Are these different names for the same drive, or did they ship me the wrong one?

You don't have a BENQ 1640 drive, they sent you a BENQ DQ60 drive.

The BENQ DQ60 drive is crappy. I suggest you contact the online retailer you bought it from and ask for a refund. A lot of online retailers advertise BENQ 1640 drives but customers end up receiving the BENQ DQ60 drive. If you want to keep the drive then check to see if your drive is in DMA mode. It sounds like it's stuck in PIO mode which is why it's taking long to rip and burn.

Here's a link on how to enable DMA MODE: http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=7625

Check out the BENQ FORUM at Cdfreaks.com on that DQ60 drive there is a thread on that drive.

The BENQ 1640 drive is entirely different from the DQ60 drive. They sent it to you because they were probably out of the BENQ 1640 drive. It's difficult to find a BENQ 1640 drive nowdays. Contact the online retailer and tell them you want a refund.
