Its come to my attention that for some reason there are a few people who STILL have not gotten a gmail invite.
They have flowed like water for some time now, so if anyone needs one post here and someone will get you setup ASAP. We'll obviously need your current address to send it to.

What's so great about Gmail vs hotmail or yahoo? (after they both raised mailbox size.) And why do you need an invitation? Can't you just go and sign up without one if you wanted to?
And what do you get out of handing out invites like some crack cocaine pusher on a slum streetcorner?
Is there some secret profit in it I'm not aware of?
Does it make you feel reeeaaal good?
Does the Gmail bouncer throw you out if you don't have an invite?
Is this some elite organization you can't join unless someone vouches for you like in the mafia?
Is Gmail attempting to take over as many net emails as possible like in invasion of the body snatchers?
:P No, seriously, what's the big deal with these invites? -
Its in beta, and signups are not opened until then, but at this point they give out so many invites that it might as well BE public signups.
Whats better? the spam blocker is great as long as you don't give the address out willy nilly and email conversations appear in a threaded view, much like a forum post.
You get nothing for handing out invites, but there was another thread where someone was trying to get in and since not everyone knows someone whos in I figured I'd put the offer out for the zillionth time. -
GMail doesn't seem to get the 50 or so unsolicited penis enlarging / cialis / unlimited credit messages per dayOriginally Posted by Shadowmistress

Plus you get google searching of your email. Plus you can use the GMail notifier without needing a window open (taskbar icon) or you can use GMailFS to use your mailbox as file storage / temp upload (max individual file size 10MB).
That's the way it is.Originally Posted by Shadowmistress
AFAIK not yet. It's still in "Beta" mode.Originally Posted by Shadowmistress

It goes back to being an elitist society. In the beginning, the very first people to be given invites were told only to invite their "cool" friends and to keep the dickheads away. Then they invited their own "cool" friends. Then they invited their own "cool" friends. All of a sudden there weren't many cool people who didn't already have GMail, so in a desperate attempt to remain cool, certain 3rd generation invitees advertised invites for free and with no questions asked at messageboards such as this one, inviting any (and all) dickheads to join the cool people. And some time after that I got my inviteOriginally Posted by Shadowmistress

BTW, I've got another 100 to give away ...If in doubt, Google it. -
I'm rather indifferent to the whole thing. I don't get any spam anymore in my hotmail account - maybe 2 will get through once every 3 months or so - and yahoo is pretty cool now as well (I just checked and only got 8 in the last 2 months - and that's my use & abuse account.) Any email provider will be spam free for you if you're selective about where you give your email out to.
10 mg file storage huh? Same as hotmail, I just email a file to myself and instant storage. 10 mg is hotmails max per file as well with a 250 mg total box size. I think yahoo is the same but I haven't really checked lately.
Gmail notifier = msn messanger. No difference to me.
One appealing thing is that it displays your emails like a forum thread. That would be cool. But an unappealing thing is that I think you can't delete any emails ever (is that correct? I think I read that somewhere). That could get annoying.
Google search would be great if I could think of an instance where I'd ever use it. Normally I'm pretty good about remembering where to find particular bits of conversation.
So in short, I'm too cool to join this club unless that 250 lbs African-American bouncer cares to try his luck at charming my socks off.
Now if they offered html page hosting the way yahoo offers pic hosting, I'd be sold straight away.

GMail's is the full 2.5GB AFAIK, and you don't have to email the stuff to yourself - it shows up in My Computer as a drive, much like a USB key. Just drag n drop, or Save As if it's a web link. Being a drive, it makes it much easier to transfer multiple files at once (say for example your friend had a 700MB XviD on their computer and no CD or DVD burner, you could split it into 10MB segments using virtualdubmod, move all files over to your GMail Drive just like copying to a folder on your hard drive, then go home, and copy it to your PC the exact same way - using Ctrl C and Ctrl V) as opposed to email, which would mean you'd have to open each and every email. And trust me, I've done that a few times now. Of course, the copying is only as quick as your upload / download allows though.Originally Posted by Shadowmistress
Nah, that's crap. It says "you never need to delete emails". Not to say you can't permanently delete them.Originally Posted by ShadowmistressIf in doubt, Google it. -
I had no interest in it until I found out it has free POP and SMTP service that works from anywhere. I hate webmail, but I use Gmail from my email program, and the pretty good spam filtering is a nice bonus.Originally Posted by Shadowmistress
No, you can't. I have plenty of invites tho, like almost anyone else who has an account. And why do you need an invitation? Can't you just go and sign up without one if you wanted to? -
I have 100 invites to offer too.
GMAIL IS DA BOMB, SISTA!!!!
I have hotmail, yahoo, gmail, juno, webmail, sprintmail, mail.com, Fastmail, AIM mail, inbox.com, MyWay mail, and a few others. If you're wondering how I keep track of them all, I don't really. I do check each one at least once a month and usually delete most everything that comes in. The only ones I regularly check are Hotmail, Gmail, & yahoo. Gmail is the account i give only to priveleged people and don't accept any forward chains or spam at. If someone chainmails me there, I block their address to that email. Hotmail is my basic one I use when I visit sites I want to have send me email. Yahoo is my trash account and people can forward me chain mails and other crap. I usually just delete it. I ask that nothing important gets sent to me there, because I most likely won't read it unless I'm in the mood.
I don't have Lycos though. They are a bunch of s**ty spyware infections waiting to happen. Spam protection my a**. I had to reformat a drive because it kept putting a program on my drive i did not want.
-
My mom and sister send me chainmail emails.
I could never block them.
Instead I make fun of them.snappy phrase
I don't know what you're talking about. -
My question is, how did the very first people get Gmail invites? I mean waaaaaay back when it was firts starting?
"A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory." -
@Doramius: Jeez man, can you say overkill?
What's your combined email storage space? Must be a full time job just checking all the addresses.
As for chainmails, I don't mind some of them that make the rounds. The kind that annoy me people already know better than to try sending to me. If I don't like it I'll send it back to them 10 times and they usually get the picture real quick.

I think invites were also sent out another way, but this is the only one I was able to get information on. The other way probably had something to do with Freemasons or Rotary International and is hush hush.

I too have 100 invites to use/issue - PM me if you're interested."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

Well so far it seems nobody is interested. Perhaps its saturated after all. Either that or those WITHOUT gmail just don't know whats good for 'em.

Faustus, I'll take a Gmail invite off you hands. Sending a PM with my email address.

Thanks for the invite Faustus. When I try to sign up it keeps reloading the sign up page. I don't know if i'm registering or not. I have tried to sign in to the account but still doesn't work. Do I have to wait or is it because I'm using firefox?
EDIT: I tried signing up with IE and I signed up with no problem. -
Odd never had a problem with Firefox and gmail before. Glad you got it worked out though.

I've got a hundred or so too, but I want sexual favors in exchange for mine.

Careful guys. You know there's some crappy email system out there where people are giving sexual favors to try and get people to join. Lycos is there and AOL might be on the verge. You know all they have are butt ugly men to give the favors too. Jack Valenti is probably among them.
