my little brother got 56k internal modem in his pc. their school gave them a free broadband internet prepaid card that they can use for their research. this internet card can connect to the internet with 1mbps speed when used in their school and 56k when used at home using dialup. but when my brother tried to connect his xp reported that it connect only at 31kbps not 56kbps. can i buy a router for him so i can make his internet speed faster. can we make it 1mbps just like the speed they have at their school. im not familiar with these things so i can't advice him what to do and i don't like asking their school net administrator either coz they are not that friendly.

You need a broadband connection to connect to get broadband speeds, either cable or DSL. A dial=up modem isn't going to doi it....

31kbps isn't great for dial-up. When I was using dial-up the average was 48, 52 at the highest. Evena bad telephone line can slow that down, some ISP's never give a good speed.... I'd google for some tweaks, you might speed it up a little.

so what do i need to connect it to a broadband connection. do i need to buy a router for him.
what information you need to input in your router in order to have a broadband connection. is the username and a password stated in his free broadband internet card sufficient to use a router? he like to watch music videos in the internet so he asked me it i could make his connection speed faster.

cable or DSL from the street>cable or DSL modem>router (not required unless you want to connect 2 or more PC's)>ethernet card.

Where his card fits in the mix I have no idea....

To get broadband internet, the first thing you need (all the equipment in the world will not help you if you don't have this) is broadband internet service (DSL, Cable).

If you already have broadband internet service (DSL, Cable) then, to share the connection between two pcs, you will need a router. Also, to connect to the router, you will have to an ethernet card in both PCs, be it wired, wireless or otherwise.

And pay for the service. Contact your local telephone company to see if they offer it.

  8. Do you currently have a broadband service where you want to connect your brothers PC. If yes then you can just get a router and share the connection. If no then you need to sign up with a service provider.

Sounds like the school has provided a network and modem card in one. At school he connects directly to their network, at home he has to dial up.

As explained several time, you will have to find a broadband ADSL provider and sign up for their service. Generally, they will provide a DSL modem/router with the service. You can then connect to this, probably using the network connection on the laptop, to get broadband from home.

Note : dial up is usually pretty portable. Uless dialback security is in use, you can dial up from anywhere to use it. DSL is restricted to a single phone number, so you will only be able to access it from one place.

I wish my dial-up connected at 31Kbs! Most it ever does is 21.6Kbs.
