I got talked into buying a router 3 years ago and now it's conked out. I only use it as a hardware firewall, but I already have a software firewall with my anti-virus program. Is it any use to buy another router since they are on Sale this Boxing week?

Just my opinion, but if you have a high speed connection, cable or DSL, I wouldn't be without one. It has an important feature, NAT (Network Address Translation) that keeps your computer off the internet. Only your router is exposed. This is a very effective firewall.

I do have more than one computer attached to mine, along with a network printer. My router/switch keeps logs of access attempts, blocks selected ISPs, and a whole lot more things that I never use.

I also use the XP firewall, an antivirus program, 2 antispyware programs on my connected computers.

NAT dosnt do any filtering. most routers have some type of built in firewall, Stateful packet inspection. make sure its enabled on your router

  4. Agreed.

Most routers have a built in firewall. I would get it just for that.

I've suggested this to callers a million times. Each time they think I'm trying to rip them off. If I only had one broadband PC I'd STILL get a good router.

You need BOTH hardware and software firewall. Mainly, hardware firewall to block incoming traffic, and software firewall to catch outgoing traffic and app hijacking attempts.
