I need input on two issues with this recorder:

    1. Burned DVD+R DL on Nero. Disc plays on my $30 DVD player, but, will not play on ES30V. Manual says cannot play DVD+R DL. Any inputs on how to get around it(any tricks in Nero etc..)

    2. After firmware update, recorder now plays 16X DVD+R (verbatim), but, still will not record on 16X DVD+R. Any inputs appreciated.

I did the same thing some time ago. You need to change the booktype (also called bitsetting) of your burner to DVD-ROM. It's a good thing to change all your +R, +RW and +R DL settings to DVD-ROM. This should allow them to play on all players and drives. Unfortunately, this must be done before you burn, nothing you can do about the one you burned already.
You can change the settings with cd/dvdspeed, click Extra then Bitsetting, change then click set, check default and it will stay that way.

Because of the date of your post, you are probably using the latest firmware for the DMR-ES30VP (dated 9-DEC-2005). If this is the case your media may not be supported yet and you should continue using 8x media in the mean time.

With my DMR-E55 +DL is supported only if bit setting is configured to DVD-ROM

It's a waste to use 16x media on a recorder, almost everything you record (off TV, DVR or VCR) will be in real 1x time. Get some inexpensive TY 4x media for your recorder.

  5. 16x Verbatim's not compatible down to 1x, but the 8x Verbatim's are and I highly recommend them.
