  1. I am having trouble keepin the files down to a reasonable size. Maybe the following questions will help me reduce any possible overkill.

    1) What is the resolution that the Playstation2 puts out? I assume I would want to use the same amount.

    2) Is the format I want to capture avi? I would then have to convert to either wmv or mpg? If converting to mpg with temp do I change the bitrate to change the filesize?

Well , I'm not the only one who dose them ...lol

My brother play's them while I sit back and record it on my pc , then encode to mpeg2 with ac3 audio for dvd later .

Had him going .. took him 3 minute's to realize what was happening .. he was watching the playback and couldn't figure out why he wasn't turning when he turned the race wheel ...

As for capturing to size , it depend's on hardware you have ..

You may have a capture device that support's encoding directly into dvd format ... it is possible to capture at higher screen resolution's on the pc using various screen capture tools ...

The one I use all the time is camstudio , size up the video preview window on the pc , something like 1200 x 1100 , set codec's , frame's per second , and let it rip ... though this entirely depend's on the pc ... the faster the cpu , the easier the task will be .

You can capture at normal rate to the pc , and upscale the video later ... but it's not worth it in the end if you are trying to get the file size down .

As for q1 , no you do not want to do that ... way too big .

As for q2 , Avi , compressed is going to give the best size , the only way to improve this is to downscale the video size ... say captured at 720x576 , resized down to 352x288 ...

Remind's me : 528mb dv1 produced from movie maker , converted by super using

    output = 13.8mbs ... yes an mpeg1 with ac3 audio .

Converted this to xvid , shaved 1mb off .

Encode original dv1 to same spec's for xvid , same size in output ... just incase .

    1) Playstation 2 puts out same amount as NTSC signal... 525 x something?

    2) Does your capture software do compression? Or just uncompressed dump?

  4. Capturing video always uses up a lot of disk space. How much are you using?

  5. Thanks to all for the replies.

Its a PCI ATI-Tv-Wonder, Intel 4 2.4 GHZ system. The software I use is Virtual VCR, for some reason its the only one I can get to work.

It uses about 1GB per minute at 640 by 480 avi file.

So if I capture at a larger res and downsize it produces better quality than just going straigh to the final size? When I try capturing with compression such as Huffy the quality is seriously degraded. Alprasoft wasnt bad but now I get errors with it.
