For my new system I'm going to order soon I looked only at the intel processor family. My choose was an Intel pentium D 830. Because I thought the intel was better for video, audio, ... and an AMD was more for games. It still is?
But now I also looked at the Athlon 64 X2. I looked at different benchmarks and moost of the time the Athlon 64 X2 4200+ is faster than the Pentium D 830 I think. So my thought that an Athlon is for games isn't true any more?

I don't want to go for a top of the line processor. I'm going to choose between:
    Pentium D 830
    Athlon 64 X2 3800+
    Athlon 64 X2 4200+

Anyone has some suggestions or comments?

  2. Athlon 64 is for games... but they are a pretty damn good processor all round. Matched against the current Pentium line-up, I would recommended an Athlon 64 X2. In terms of the very high end processors, Intel still probably has an edge on video encoding.

  3. For more information on why Intel CPUs are better at video encoding and AMD CPUs better at gaming and general-purpose computing, see:

I have always used AMD CPUs because they are by no means slow when it comes to video encoding and they provide a lot more bang for your buck in other areas. If my computer was solely for video encoding, I'd go for an Intel system (money allowing).
