Starting from scratch or with nothing at all, 5 tapes at $12 each is only $60. I don't know of a much easier or cheaper way. The next option I guess would depend if you had or could borrow a camcorder with pass thru and dump it into your PC. From there the future is wide open

    Only if you are lucky!

The thing that I was thinking is that if there are units that cheap, then there ought to be some price drops on the better units or at least fuller featured units at a fairer price than I was thinking. Interesting, I may have to look into this a bit more now.

You need a capture card/device. Look to the left under "Lists" for "Capture Cards"

camcorder is it = digital camera ?
No. You need a digital Camcorder that will convert analog to digital and forward the digital signal to a USB2 or Firewire (preferred) port.

how do I can use it pass thru and dump it into pc?
That will depend on the make/model of Camcorder you use. The general process is to connect the analog outputs from the VCR to the analog inputs to the Camcorder, connect the iLink/firewire port on the Camcorder to the firewire port on the computer. Then use a "capture" software, such as WinDV. Press play on the VCR and Capture on the software. This will put the video on the hard-drive in DV-AVI format (approx 13.5 gig ber hour). From there you edit and encode to your hearts content.

    gadgetguy thank you alots!

I have a digital camcorder and Im trying to find how to use it! Now I think I also need to have a good card! any standard recommand of Capture Cards ! 8) or cheap cards!

Does anyone know about firewire? I don know how much is it and how to install it into PC! If can, I think I will choose firewire to transfer VHS player to PC with firewire, is that possible?

Cost rise with firewire (of course, if you have a camera that converts to dv, then you only need a DV in on your PC...)

The cheapest way to capture VHS is with a cheap BT8xx based card. Second hand cost 10 - 20 Euros those days. You also need software to capture, convert, author and burn your projects, that also costs. Freeware solutions do exist, but: They are complicated and need time to learn

When you buy a capture card, it may has software to use. Usually it low class but in your case it might work

If you consider all the options, the best solution in your case, is a DVD Standalone recorder. Easy, fast (realtime) and with great picture quality.
And you can use it later for recording events from TV
