    Hi All,
I have several Xvid files of varying audio and video bitrate. All play on computer (VLC player, Real Alternative) fine and G- Spot recognises all as avi's with required codecs to play. However, when i try to convert some to DVD there is a problem. I have tried to use WinAvi 7, DvdSanta 3.45 Build 5242 and Divx2Dvd and as soon as i try to load the avi's to these programmes, i get a box informing me that the prog has encountered a problem and needs to close. I cant really glean much info from the problem log. Is it just one of those things and could be the way that the original Xvid was made ( i didn't do the original encoding).

Given this happens across a number of avis and a number of applications, I would first suspect a problem with the codec. That g-spot says they are there only means the correct codecs have been installed. g-spot won't tell you if they are actually working. I would start by uninstalling and reinstalling the xvid codec. If that does not fix the problem, try using codec sniper to get rid of it, and try using ffdshow instead.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't bother with WinAVI or DVD Santa. I have used Divxtodvd, and have generally found it to be reliable and OK to use for fast and dirty conversions. If you are serious about getting the best out of your conversions though, start playing with fitcd, avisynth and a decent encoder. It will double your quality at least in one swoop.
