  1. HI

Is there any advantage of using a ripping software over of just copying the content of the VIDEO_TS folder
if i only want to have the complete content of a dvd and I don't care about the space it takes...

    thanx

You can't just copy the files in VIDEO_TS from it to your hard drive -- that's the whole reason ripping software is required in the first place; to get around the CSS encryption scheme that prevents the files from being copied directly.

The only times you can copy the files directly are if you're copying them from an unencrypted commercial DVD (there aren't many, but there are a few, particularly the ultra-cheap "dollar-store" titles filled with public-domain material), or from a DVD-R copy (recordable media doesn't support CSS and is unencrypted by default).

I used AnyDVD in the past. Of course it's decrypter software also. It runs in the background and you can directly copy/paste the files in explorer. I stopped using it cause thangs went bad in my pc because of it.

You can give it a try for free & see if you like it. Don't know if it covers the new SONY protection though. See the tools section

    cheers

...or DVD±R/RW Masters from a Client (I get these all the time).

Another advantage to using a ripper is that it usually removes region coding, PUO's and other unwanted things that the manufacturer likes to include. Definitely try AnyDVD as it will do the things I listed but do it the way that you wanted which is copying the VIDEO_TS folder. 8)

  6. Ok great thanx

i have a question about terminology
if copying a VIDEO_TS folder from a dvd to a hard disk is called ripping
what would you called taking the content of a dvd convert into a avi file on a hard disk ?

That would be 'encoding'. Though 'ripping' is not exactly copying as explained above. 'Transcoding' is another term you will see as in using a program like DVDShrink to back up a DVD. Transcoding sort of reformats the DVD, while encoding may change it from one format to another. (AVI to MPEG or the reverse, for example.)

Look to the 'GLOSSARY' in the upper left for more 'in depth' explanations. <<<<<
