  1. I have a question about shut-down problem with Windows xp. I am in China and have Chinese windows xp. Since last week, I have not been able to shut down or shut down/restart my computer. When I go to the start menu and and try to initiate the shut down process, nothing happens. If I wait for a few minutes, nothing happens. The computer just stays on. Also, if AFTER I try to shut it down, and then I click IE or some other program, I get an exe. error message. The only way I can shut down the computer is by pressing the reset button on the computer. Then it shuts off immediately. When I restart the computer, sometimes I get the scan disk, sometimes not. Anyway, after pressing the reset button, the computer will start up and everything seems to work fine. Also, if I start to install a program that asks me if I want to shut down/restart the computer, if I say "Yes", the computer also will not shut down. I have to press the reset button to shut it down. After restarting the computer, then the software (any software that I am trying to install) will be installed or deleted properly. My question is, as a newbie, is there something I can try to do to solve this problem?

I would try doing a repair install of windows. Basically, boot from your XP CD and begin the install process as you would normally for a new PC. Do not select repair console at the first option. Once you have selected a disk to install windows to, it should detect that windows is already installed, and offer to do a repair install. It will replace all the files, but it will not rewrite the registry or affect any installed software.

sounds like your hard drive is bad and your OS is corrupted
how often do you defragment your hard drive? (though by now, it's probably to late for that to help)

    Hello,
there can be many reasons, and i'll just address the two most common reasons......
First thought I do recommend you clean up the hard drive alittle bit.. purge your internet cache, clear history files and DEFRAG!!! those in themselves can cure a lot of ill's. smile....
    sooo.
    1. run your antispyware and antivirus scanner.. too make there no malware causing your issue.....

    2. this is thee most common and that is you have some sort of program (programs!) running in the background that is causing all the conflicts....
I suggest disable, all startup prorgrams including screen saver,.... back track turning one on at a time, eboot, untill hopefully you find the culprit...
note1. .... in fact permenently disable alllllll needless programs from starting up......
    2. golden rule on installing software is that you always turn off all programs running in the background.... programs running are notorius for interferring with a installation of software...
