  1. I have some Xvid files, that when I double click on them to play in the basic Windows Media Player, the file launches and about 2 seconds after the video comes on, there is a Windows Explorer error, and basically everything but the background goes blank, but the video still plays, then slowly everything comes back up. Even if I simply click once on the file in the folder, it will freeze up and restart windows explorer. Oddly enough, in some DVD authoring programs like Nero and Divx to DVD, I can select these video files with no windows explorer freeze ups/errors. Any suggestions? I'm on Windows XP.

try virtualdub. Go to the video tab and select error mode. Then it will let you know if there are bad frames or other errors in the file.

regsvr32.exe /u shmedial.dll to disable MS' buggy thumbnail shell extension. You reckon they would have fixed this by now though? Guess you can't expect too much from MS though only been a couple of years.

I managed to disable WMP completely on my computers and have been happy with the loss. I use Zoom player and VLC most of the time. I like Zoom because I can configure it easily to the way I want it and it saves the configuration for future use. VLC is a good standby to play just about anything you throw at it.

  5. I downloaded VLC.... but it's now having the same problem as WMP has. I'll have to try virtualdub and see if there's errors.

  6. Don't you need codecs to play with windows media player?

Also try Bsplayer, it seems to play whatever I ask of it.

  7. I have the latest codecs for Xvid installed, but that doesn't seem to be doing the trick.
