  1. I did a search and found others with the same problem, but no one had a solution.

I have an image iso file. I can open it with DVD Shrink and eliminate the audio tracks and subtitles that I don't want. I only want English. But when I play the movie, the subtitles are on and I have to turn them off. Is there a way for me to force them to be off by default?

I know that if I re-author and just use the main movie title, I can right-click on it and Set Default Streams. But that option isn't enabled when you're backing up the full disc.

  2. Have you tried the setup menu on the DVD player?

  3. I can turn the subtitles off on the dvd player. That's not the problem. But since I'm the one that is modifying the ISO that will burn to the DVD, I'd like the subtitles to be disabled by default.

Finish shrinking, then use IFOEdit to change jsut the IFO files to set the subs off by default.

As far as I know DVDShrink does not have an option to force subs to be viewed....only to change the default language to be played so it is most likely the fault of your player.

I use Shrink in Re-Author mode to keep just the main movie and English subtitles. If I am starting with a Region 2 PAL DVD, the final Shrunk backup plays perfectly. If I am starting with a Regio 1 NTSC DVD, when I play it back the subtitles are on by default and have to be turned off on the player (Sony DVD/VHS combo). I have absolutely no idea why this happens but it does.

Whether this is relevant or not I don't know, but I thought it worth throwing in to give a bit more info.

  7. If you don't want subtitles being showed, why don't you simply remove them in DVDShrink?

Well see, that's the thing. I'm asking how.

Well, in reauthor mode, if you right click the title, you have the option to "force" subtitle and audio streams (set default streams) or "Let the player decide".

  10. Turning subtitles off by default using PGCEdit:

It could be however, as MOVIEGEEK said earlier, that you have your DVD player set up to play subs by default. My player has such a setting, and when On, they play, and when Off, they don't, unless I've turned them on by default in the DVD's menu. You might look for such a setting in the Setup Menu of your player.

No - if that were the case, all DVDs would be like that. But the only time it happens is if I backup a DVD with DVD Shrink, removing unwanted audio and subtitles.

If I use re-author mode, how do I keep the DVD intact? I don't want to make any changes other than to remove some audio and subtitles.

On the right side, I see:

    VTS 1
    VTS 2

    Title 1
    Title 2

If I move the Titles over, I get no menus. If I try to move the VTS entries over to the re-authored DVD, I get a long error. The highlights are:

DVD Shrink cannot retain menu functionality when you re-author a menu. Instead, all menu buttons will be removed, and the menu will be converted into a regular video clip.

Then your only option is to edit the IFO before burning to disc with IfoEdit or other similar app.
